Tacloban City (31 January 2006) -- Per laboratory examinations on ouse bio-assay fo shell meat samples and plankton analysis on toxic dinoflagellates in seawater samples collected along the waters of Naval, Biliran Province, Maqueda, Villareal Bay and Irong-irong Bay, and municipal waters of Tarangnan, Samar last January 16-18, conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources through its Regional Director Gil A. Adora, it was found that Irong-irong Bay of Brgy. Mahayag, Catbalogan, Samar were found positive of red tide biotoxin.
The waters of Villareal Bay, along the municipal waters of Tarangnan, Samar and Maqueda Bay were found negative.
For those areas that were found to be free from toxic red tide, harvest and trading of shellfish such as tahong is allowable.
However, in areas which are positive of toxic red tide, harvest and trading of shellfish like tahong is banned. Fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and wash thoroughly and internal organs are removed before cooking. Alamang or hipon from red tide affected areas are not safe for human consumption. (PIA-8)
