BAGUIO CITY - Tommy Manotoc showed yesterday why he's the most successful player in Fil-Am golf championship history, putting together an eagle-aided 40 points as Calatagan threatened to run away with the Fil title here.
Manotoc's round, the equivalent of a four-under card at the par-68 John Hay course here, kicked off a fiery secondday assault by Calatagan that had it opening a huge 23-point spread over closest pursuer CAP-Southwoods.
National player Juvic Pagunsan and Boyet Zaragoza each had a 39 while another national, Solomon Gines, scored 35 to round out Calatagan's 153 in the 51st edition of this event that has lured 700 golfers from across the nation.
"The greens and the pin placements were more receptive to good scoring today," said Manotoc, a five-time individual champion here, who prepared for this event with a stint in the Hong Open where he placed seventh. - MB, 12/2000
