PIA Davao City (1 December 2005) -- Engr. Merly Cruz, regional director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in the Davao region stressed the need to comply with the agreed commitment with
industry players at the local level.
Cruz in an interview at Marco Polo Hotel during the Mindanao Exporters Congress 2005 said regional directors have to be conscious what the industry
needs.
"The needs of the industry in the local market will have to be responded by the government," she said.
She said President Arroyo after a consultation of priorities at the macro level expects results within six months but it seems hindi pa ito na touch (it has not been tackled).
"We really have to act on it otherwise di na maniwala ang mga key players in the industry and
whatever are the commitments have to be translated into actions," she said.
She said they are engaging the expertise of the
University of the Philippines in Mindanao as the center for excellence for the SME development
The localization of commitment has still to be within the eight industries namely, banana, mango, coconut, seaweeds, wood, ICT, tourism, and mining.
Cruz said there are also allied concerns that cut across the industry. And among these are the high cost of imported inputs, absence of crucial port facilities required by domestic and international vessels, vital equipment where material testing center are not in working condition, licensing, limited laboratory equipment, upgrading of education and skills.
Other concerns are on tariff imposed by China for Philippine exports, export documentation, peace and order concerns, financing, and on human resource development. (PIA/pdbanzon)
