HIV AIDS Campaign in Davao City

Davao City (1 December 2005) -- Patricia Melizza Ruivivar, representative of the City Mayor to the Davao City Aids Council (DCAC) said that the City Government has stepped up its campaign against HIV/AIDS, and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) to prevent further spread and reduce the impact of the disease on individuals, families and communities.

In a short message during the whole day DCAC Stakeholders' meeting Wednesday (November 29) at Loring's restaurant, Davao City. City Health Officer and Nutrition action officer Dr. Josephine Villafuerte said that the City is promoting public awareness through citywide information and education drive to better prevent the spread of STI, HIV and AIDS in Davao City.

Dr. Rose Cueto of CHO has presented the 4th Philippine AIDS Medium Term plan while Ms. Alma Mondragon presented the DCAC Strategic plan.

The formulation and implementation of socio-economic development policies and programs has included the impact of HIV/AIDS infection and have mainstreamed it to the development plans of Davao City.

Dr. Villafuerte said the citizenry is now empowered to prevent the further transmission of STI'HIV in any situations.

CHO is undertaking a sustained effort in providing treatment and support services for the infected individuals. We are also pursing social services for these victims while respecting the rights of he victims, she said.

Efforts are being pursued by CHO to ensure a meaningful involvement of persons infected and affected by HIV/AIDS as we continue monitoring and evaluating HIV/AIDS situation, she said.

Policy directions for the 2005-2010 action plan ensures that: 1) measures and programs undertaken by the city in consonance with the national level's programs and should be responsive to the identified needs of concerned sectors, individuals and groups;

2) Priority must be given to the infected and affected as to existing and emergent highly-vulnerable groups, especially those not covered in the action plan which include overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), youth, infected and affected children;

3) Interventions must be given due attention. Systems to monitor and measure quality of every intervention must be put in place; and

4) It shall embody all ongoing assisted projects and programs on HIV/AIDS to ensure integration, harmony of purpose and direction and avoid overlaps. (PIA)
