Filipino culture’s forgiving ways

Commentary: A significant start indeed
Baguio City (28 June 2005) -- Finally breaking her silence, President Arroyo apologized Monday for talking with an election official about her hopes for a million-vote margin in last year’s election, calling it a lapse in judgment.

This move of the President shows that she was strong, confident and truthful. She addressed the issue head-on and demonstrated full command of the situation. This is indeed a “significant start,’ as the business community and former President Cory Aquino put it.
The President’s apology has ushered a positive reaction from the economic market, the business sector and even the peso. This somehow proves that the nation has been on the importance of the economy and the positive reactions from the sector will reinforce the national predisposition to forgive and move on.

President Arroyo should however strive to deliver an immediate follow-through of swift and bold reforms with unprecedented use of political will. This time, all the reforms and even safety nets must be felt by all. Immediate attention must be put back to the looming oil crisis showing a marked return to vigilance and delivery of services. The President’s economic team must immediately rebuild confidence from the aftermath.

As expected, there will be legal moves and protest actions but with the Filipino culture’s forgiving ways, those who are courageous and humble enough to admit their fault will always have space in the forgiving hearts of the Filipinos.

Most of the ordinary people interviewed over television after the President’s statement had expressed their readiness to forgive and give the President another chance, and most of the nation still saw the humility and sincerity of PGMA as she asked forgiveness.

While no doubt the opposition will continue to stir the pot, for most reasonable people, this issue should now take a back seat. We must move to the business of the nation. (PIA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
