DOH and Davao unite for health
Quezon City (25 June 2005) -- The Department of Health and some municipalities in Davao are in sync as the government and the
Davaoeños move for a healthy Filipino in the fulfillment of the International Conference on Population and Development's (ICPD) millenium development goals.
In response to the 2000 ICPD-MPD set to fight poverty and hunger, DOH organized several programs to help alleviate health problems in the country. Among these programs are providing vitamin A supplements for preschoolers, ferrous sulfate for low birth-weight infants, giving of early child care and development (ECCD) cards, and trainor's training on enhanced child growth strategy and international reference standards.
Municipalities in Davao have also acted on the call of ICPD through municipal projects like the Integrated Rice Production and Financing Program in New Corella, Davao Del Norte; meeting farmer's needs in Malalalag, Davao Del Sur; and a literacy program in Dujali town, Davao Del Norte where local and national resources meet.
The MPD was adopted by 147 government heads and 191 member-states who attended the ICPD held in September 2000 where other issues like the promotion of gender equality; reduction of child mortality; labor; nutrition; battle against HIV/AIDS; malaria and other diseases; maternal health; matching grants; and health and sanitation were discussed.
