Dad raps CCMC doctors for death of brod
CEBU CITY, Oct. 1 2002 (PNA) -- Cebu City Councilor Procopio Fernandez
only has reproach for the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC), following
the untimely death of his younger brother Sunday night.
Fernandez said his brother Dominador would have been alive had he
been attended to immediately by CCMC doctors.
"I don't know why Dominador was left to suffer on his bed and not
transferred to the ICU," Fernandez said in Cebuano.
Dominador, 54, was rushed to the hospital after he suffered from a
heart attack in his house in Talisay City.
He was later proclaimed to be in a stable condition.
However, shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday, Dominador had another attack,
which resulted to his death, the councilor said.
He said he too was told that only two doctors were on duty that
night, one of whom was sent to the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center
(BBRC) to check on the health condition of PBMA supreme master Ruben
Ecleo Jr.
The other doctor was left to attend to the needs of other patients
confined at the hospital, he said. The second doctor returned to CCMC
after Ecleo was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of CCMC, he
said.
"The attending physician did not also have the wits to send
Dominador to the hospital ICU, when he had his attack. While Ecleo
occupied one room, another room was available for occupancy at the
ICU," Fernandez said.
Councilor Cristopher Alix, chairperson of the committee on health
and hospital services, admitted the "shortcomings" of the hospital,
Fernandez said.
While he is in mourning, Fernandez said he is undecided on whether
to ask for an investigation on his brother's death.
"I still have questions to settle," he said.
Mayor Tomas Osmena earlier threatened not to increase the City's
P100-million allocation for health services in next year's budget,
unless CCMC personnel deliver "better" services.
The City Council also summoned CCMC chief Lydia Salarda last
September 12 to answer the alleged mismanagement of the hospital.
Legislators are also bent on investigating the alleged inefficiency
of hospital staff and the alleged sale of government medicines to
privately owned pharmacies.
An investigating body will later be formed by Acting Mayor Michael
Rama to look into the matter. (PNA)
