Commentary: Of sobriety and patriotism

Baguio City (1 July 2005) -- The events that transpired the other night at the House of Representatives demonstrated not only the clear separation of powers between the Executive and the Congress, but the rule of law and due process which all sectors of the society should uphold. It was a display of the independence of the House from the Executive although majority of them are allies.

The way the President's detractors have become numb to the repercussions of their acts on the economy-- pushing perceptions of uncertainty to the limit and inflicting untold hardships upon the people, is so appalling that a lot are aghast at the amount of heckling and insults hurled at the Presidency.

These people must already heed the call to keep to Constitutional standards, for sobriety and patriotism in the midst of the crisis, if only to push our economy forward. At the moment, the situation is causing more negative impact to the economy, which makes it even harder for the Filipinos.

The expressions of support the President has been receiving from well-meaning sectors-the Church, business sector and even former President Cory Aquino, give her more strength as she carries forward the bold reforms that will continue to uplift the lives of average Filipinos.

Meanwhile, the best way to deflect the insults and challenges directed at the Presidency is direct, massive reforms--- cushioning the impact of the EVAT on the price of fuel and basic goods by selective suspension of EVAT implementation while intensifying tax and other revenue collection efforts, curbing corruption, broader implementation of austerity measures, and exacting performance in the bureaucracy; call for an immediate institution of political reforms possibly through amending the constitution, centering on the shift from presidential-unitary-bicameral legislature to parliamentary-federal-unicameral legislature form of government; and purging and consolidation of non-performing GOCC's and GFI's to optimize resources to promote entrepreneurship and micro-finance to generate employment and job opportunities.

The strong actions of the entire government in vital fronts will project her true power. (PIA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
