DTI-7: Cebu exports registers 6% growth for 1st qtr
Cebu City (29 June 2005) --
Cebu exports registered a growth of six percent for the first quarter this year with corresponding monetary value of US $998.98M based on the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI-7) record.
Products from Cebu that are being exported abroad include electronics, furniture, fashion accessories, processed foods, gifts, toys & housewares (GTH), among others. The figure for the second quarter has yet to be released by the DTI-7.
DTI-7 chief of the Institutional Development Division Rose Mae Quiñanola expressed optimism that the value of exports in the region would continue to rise in spite of projections that the demand for electronic products could slow down.
The electronics sector comprised 24 percent of the total export industry in Cebu, according to Quiñanola. Electronic items manufactured here that are being shipped to other countries include electronic components, telephone sound and video apparatus, print cartridge, computer magnetic discs, camera paraphernalia, cellular phone parts and electronic watches.
For the past three years, the value of Cebu exports has been on an uptrend from 2002 to 2004 as seen in the comparative trade and industry indicators report of the DTI-7. In 2002, exports grew by three percent worth US $ 686.5M that increased to 12 percent in 2003 at US $ 770.56M. Last year, the growth in exports soared to 23 percent with US $943.98M.
The Trade Department signified confidence that even with an anticipated slowdown of electronics shipments, the 10 percent projected growth of the country's exports by yearend is achievable. (PIA-7)
