Cebu City (1 July 2005) -- Amid a nationwide uproar and the varied reactions from all sectors on the President's public confession and apology, fourteen (14) business leaders in Cebu staunchly support President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's government and readily accepted her public confession and apology. This was contained in a joint press statement yesterday.
Calling themselves Cebu's multi-sectoral group, they strongly declared their unconditional support to the President and her administration. "What the President did is a mark of a true leader, a real stateswoman who takes full responsibility for her actions," the statement read.
Benson Dakay, president of the Seaweed Industry Association of the Philippines warned that the economy would crash if President Arroyo resigns. " There is no better leader at this point in time. The Philippines is facing an economic crisis and a change in leadership would make it worse," Dakay said in media interview.
The statement also called on the political leaders and the public to join hands in a show of unity, act in sobriety and vigilance, move forward and attend to the many problems confronting the nation.
The statement was signed by the following organizations: Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay & Leyte); Philippine Chamber of Commerce 7 Industry; Philippine Exporters Confederation-Cebu; FAME Foundation Philippines, Inc; Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation; Seaweed Industry association of the Philippines; Hotel, Resorts & Restaurants Association; Cebu GTH; Cebu Banker's Club; Cebu Association of Tour Operators and Barug!
