Canned pineapple tops Customs' list of export products in Normin

Cagayan de Oro City (1 July 2005) -- CANNED Pineapple remains first in the list of top 20 export products that were loaded at the Port of Cagayan de Oro for various destinations abroad during the first quarter of 2005.
As the records at the Bureau of Customs in Region 10 show, these top 20 export products totaled 1,115,212.868 tons in volume all valued at US$73,834,373.32.
Lawyer Roberto Sacramento, District Collector of BOC-10, said topping the list of these exports is canned pineapple with 45,663.716 tons valued at US$21,511,492.96, followed by fatty alcohol with 7,139.5 tons at US$10,361,535.24, and sintered ore with 734,307 tons at US$5,674,248.85.
Ordinary portland cement came next with 198,867.66 tons at US$5,049,450, cane raw sugar, 13,732.82 tons at US$4,698,776.48, steel scrap, 22,686.455 tons at US$2,859,000, and everyday milk powder, 1,541.581 tons at US$2,353,740.49;
Alkyl methyl amine, 948.8 tons at US$2,131,607, cane molasses, 35,773.463 tons at US$2,058,750, farmin, 924.444 tons at US$1,861,998.76, rubberboots, 262.487 tons at US$1,808,575.78, and KF finished lumber/wood products, 1,475.071 tons at US$1,784,065.11;
Steel coil, 2,770 tons at US$1,032,619.26, limestone cement, 34,700 tons at US$988,950, machine parts, 257.438 tons at US$896,310.04, and silicon metal, 1,049.824 tons at US$888,624.
Four of the top 20 products are derived from coconuts, namely: desiccated coconut, 6th in the list with 3,699.358 tons at US$3,429,466.93, crude coconut oil, 8th, with 4,300.004 tons at US$2,420,000, coconut shell charcoal, 15th, with 4,825.416 tons at US$1,294,546.92, and coconut milk powder, 20th, with 285.831 tons at US$730,615.50.
As recalled, canned pineapple also topped the regionwide list of top 10 export products of Northern Mindanao for the first quarter of the year. Featured in the said list were four coconut products: cochin coconut oil, 2nd, crude coconut oil, 4th, desiccated coconut, 9th, and copra solvent extraction pellets, 10th.
Data at the National Economic and Development Authority reveal that he region's total exports for the period was recorded at US$102.295 million.
Meanwhile, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has congratulated the Bureau of Customs under the leadership of Commissioner Alberto Lina for having increased its collections by 11% in the first five months of the year due to improved efficiency and an all-out campaign against smugglers.
So far, Lina has reassigned 40 more BOC officials and personnel in another round of reshuffle, the third one since taking over the bureau four months ago to curb rampant graft and improve revenue collections.
On the other hand, Task-Force Anti-Smuggling Chief and Interior Secretary Angelo Reyes has ordered a thorough review of accreditation of at least 16 customs bonding companies, including five of them that have yet to comply with the requirements. (PIA-10)
