Boholanos say silent prayers for Cardinal Sin

Tagbilaran City (27 June 2005) -- Boholanos bowed for at least five minutes to pray for the eternal rest of a liberator and true champion of the people's cause during a prayer rally held at the Carlos P. Garcia Complex Tagbilaran City June 23, 2005.

Jaime Cardinal Sin, retired Archbishop of Manila and undoubtedly one of the most prominent icons of the world famous non-violent change of powers in the country died early morning of June 21, 2005.

To the cardinal's death, Mrs. Arroyo said "the nation bemoans the passing away of the nation's greatest political and church icon."

In a presidential press statement read by Presidential Spokesperson Ignacio Bunye last Wesnesday, the president said "history will mark this day of sadness when a great liberator of the Filipino people and a champion of God passed away."

Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin has been an established icon for liberation of the masses, has been a staunch supporter of the people's cause and champions the masses, especially when he made himself available to fight for the repression that the Filipinos experienced in the past.

Himself a vary prominent fixture in the two chapters of the EDSA peoples power, Malacanang said the death of Cardinal Jaime Sin should unite the Filipino people and make them set aside their differences.

In Bohol, his death sent different reactions, some pointing out his propensity to cross the thin barrier separating the church and the state and another, of a doubtless force that could command the people to cross the parted sea to liberation.

Newspapers quoted the president drawing her personal strengths from the Cardinal, who has proven to be strong when necessity calls for it.

Mrs. Arroyo has ordered that all flags in all government buildings and installations be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset beginning June 25 to 28 as part of the country's mourning for his demise.

Many people saw him as one guided by wisdom and profound love for the poor and oppressed.
With his death too, calls for the realization of his dream of a Philippines united in peace and justice resounds.

The call to shake off dissent and build a nation, one and undivided, in the memory of a hero of EDSA I and II, becomes an imperative after the death of a blessed man who never failed to unite Filipinos during the most crucial battles against tyranny and evil, a newspaper columnist writes. John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
