A jail guard at the Bohol Detention and Rehabilitation Center (BDRC) committed suicide late yesterday afternoon while on duty at his post.
The casualty, identified as JG Restituto Evangelista, 35, a resident of barangay Sto. Niño, Talibon town, had just assumed his shift in Post No. 5 at 4 o’clock in the afternoon before committing suicide using his .38 caliber service firearm.
PO3 Fernando Mahumot, a police posted at the BDRC, said he immediately hurried towards the post of Evangelista after he heard a gunshot coming from said spot. Mahumot saw Evangelista already slumped and bleeding with his service firearm lying in the floor.
Evangelista was rushed to the Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
As of presstime, the PNP crime laboratory was still performing paraffin test to determine whether Evangelista really fire his service weapon to himself. BDRC authorities, however, denied any possibility of foul play in said incident.
