Bohol Island thrills ASEAN ministers

This year, the province of Bohol, particularly the beautiful island of Panglao, was privileged enough to be selected as the venue for this annual gathering of the Special Senior Officials Meeting of the 27th ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF).

Most, if not all, of the ASEAN ministers wanted to extend their stay in the island as the aesthetic beauty and the warmth of the people thrilled them no end.

The gathering was held at the posh pavilion of the Bohol Beach Club in the tourist’ island of Panglao.

In his opening address, Gov. Erico B. Aumentado emphasized the importance of such an international gathering to Bohol’s booming agro-eco-tourism industry.

The governor led local officials in welcoming the delegates, which started arriving Tuesday, August 29 for the three-day gathering that lasted till Aug. 31, Thursday.

Philippine Secretary of Agriculture, Domingo F. Panganiban, delivered the keynote address.

In his message, the secretary emphasized the relevance of sustaining cooperation, convergence, and commitment of the 10-member nations of ASEAN in trying to achieve common development goals in the region on agriculture, trade and commerce.

He also mentioned that the Philippines will host and chair this year’s 12th ASEAN Summit in December with the theme “One Caring and Sharing Community.”

Delegates to this year’s meeting of ASEAN Senior Officials to the AMAF were headed by Dato Haji Mohd Hamid Bin Haji Mohd Jaafar of the country of Brunei Darussalam, Mr. San Vanty of Cambodia, Dr. Hasanuddin Ibrahim of Indonesia, Mr. Xaypladeth Choulamany of Lao PDR, Tan Sri Dato’ Abi Musa Asa’ari Mohamed Nor of Malaysia, U Tin Htut Oo of the country of Myanmar, Mr. Suthiporn Chirapanda of Thailand, Dr. Chua Sin Bin of Singapore, Mrs. Hoang Thi Dung of Vietnam, and Assistant Secretary Romeo Recide of the Philippines. Dr. Somsak Pippopinyo headed the ASEAN Secretariat, who facilitated this year’s SSOM.

This year’s Chairman of the 27th Special SOM-AMAF is DA Undersecretary Segfredo Serrano, and co-chaired by Asst. Secretary Catherine Mae Santos of the DA Central Office, and Regional Executive Director of Region VII, Dr. Eduardo B. Lecciones, Jr.

AMAF meetings are held yearly and attended by ASEAN Ministers and Senior Officials in charge of agriculture, fisheries and forestry.

These are preceded by regular Senior Officials Meetings, which usually review the implementation of projects under AMAF, as reported by the ASEAN Sectoral Working Groups on Crops, Livestock, Fisheries, Research and Development, Agricultural Training and Extension, Cooperatives, and Joint Promotion of Agricultural and Fisheries Products.

The Philippines hosted the AMAF meeting last year in Tagaytay City. (Publicity/Media Affairs Committee, SSOM-27TH AMAF)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
