Best in Filipino Seen During Calamity

The best in the Filipino is always seen during calamities. It is seen in the way their coping mechanism works in the light of devastation.

While the government is the bulwark of leadership and coordination during rehabilitation efforts, singly or as a group the citizens do whatever is needed to be done to rise from the rubble of destruction.

As past of its disaster management, the government directs government agencies in monitoring its work-related functions to ensure that the people are nor disadvantaged by the outcome of the calamity.

Agencies whose functions are directly involved in the protection of the people’s welfare are instructed to monitor the situation which may impact on the lives and properties. For instance, the Department of Trade and Industry spot-checks markets in Metro Manila on fluctuations of prices of commodities. Education-related agencies like the DepEd, the Commission on Higher Education and TESDA links up with the Department of Public Works and Highways in the conduct of structural checks on school buildings and clearing up the debris which may cause harm to students.

While financial assistance will be provided for families who died in the devastation, relief and medical operations for the 61,000 families will be continuously provided jointly be the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Health in coordination with concerned local government units.

Double whammy in the aftermath of a typhoon comes in the form of water and electric utilities being destroyed. The government is focused in coordinating with water utility facilities, TRANSCO, NAPOCOR, MERALCO and other electric cooperatives in the restoration efforts to bring about normalcy of said utility services.
