Leyte students benefit from new education approach

Tacloban City (4 July 2005) -- The Applied Education for Excellence (APEX) which was started in school year 2004-2005 in selected public high schools in eight municipalities and cities of Leyte is now shoowing good results as indicated in the evaluation made by the coordinator of the project, the South East Asia Ministry of Education Organization (SEAMEO0 Innotech based in Quezon City and supervised by the Department of Education (DepEd).

The APEX program is in line with the Ten Point Agenda (Beat the Odds) of Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as it provides the high school students the much needed emphasis on the subjects in Math, Science and English in order that they will be globally competitive. It also affords the students to actively participate in class activities as the new approach involves every student through group dynamics and at the same time they are taught the necessary skills needed in the industries available in the community, thus, they are qualified to become entrepreneurs upon graduation in the secondary level.

The piloted cities of this program are Tacloban and Ormoc and the municipalities are Tanauan, Dulag, Alangalang, Baybay, Isabel and Kananga. According to Mayor Roque Tiu of Tanauan who finds time to observe the APEX class at the Tanauan National High School, this is one of the best things that ever happened to the education sector of the municipality.

The above-mentioned local government units together with the provincial government of Leyte contributed separately different amounts, depending on the size of the locality, to the program which will last for the next four years. This school year starts the training of the teachers of other high schools of the covered local governments so that all the secondary schools thereat will all follow the APEX approach.

The APEX program is a technology transferred from Cord International which holds office in Waco, Texas, USA. In 2003, several educators and elected officials from the covered local government units visited and made observations in the USA specifically at Nashville, Tennessee on the APEX program. The team was composed of Then governor now representative of the first district of Leyte, Congresswoman Remedios L. Petilla, DepEd VIII regional director Sol Matugas, Leyte division superintendent Aurora Villarente, Mayors Loreto Yu of Alangalang, Manuel Sia Que of Dulag, Jose Carlos Cari of Baybay and Roque Tiu of Tanauan. John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
