Surigao del Norte (1 December 2005) -- The strong alliance to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) in the province has been forged among various organizations and agencies, each with a different mandate but all having a common goal: to eliminate the the lymphatic filariasis problem of the province.
It has been known that LF in the region has been around for quite a
time already. The Department of Health-Caraga Region has worked towards attaining the main goal that is to eradicate the disease in the region by 2010. Although this disease doesn't kill, it has been known to destroy one's life by way of
social and economic costs. Human suffering due to stigma and loss of productivity has been well documented.
In the province, 3 Filariasis sentinel sites have already been identified as the breeding ground of filaria disease, these are from the municipality of Mainit, specifically in Barangay Marayag, municipality of Claver, specifically in Barangay Urbiztondo and municipality of Gigaquit, specifically in Barangay Camam-onan. It is in the latter municipality that there is a significant increase of filariasis cases despite of the 2 Mass Drug Administrations.
Early support in the task of eliminating lymphatic filariasis came when the Coalition for the Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis (CELF)-Philippines oriented the Provincial Health Officers, Provincial Health Team Leaders and other stakeholders of Caraga about their organization last September of this year. The concept and vision, mission of CELF-Philippines settled in the minds of the Surigaonon doctors thus decided to adopt it in Surigao del Norte with the support of key and strategic stakeholders and leaders in the province.
And so, this gave birth to CELF-Surigao del Norte, it is interesting to note that the CELF-SDN is the first local CELF organized in the Philippines with the following members from the Provincial Health Office, Provincial Health Team, City Health Office, DILG, Alpha Phi Omega, Couples for Christ, DepEd Surigao City and Surigao del Norte Divisions, SUNGCOD, PACEMCO, Taganito Mining Corporation, Hinatuan Mining Corporation, Greenstone Mining Corporation, NCIP, PAMET, PIA and Local Government Units.
It is also worthwhile to note that among the provinces in Caraga, it is the province of Surigao del Norte initiated its adoption with the full support of Gov. Robert Lyndon Barbers with a mission to assist in the national effort to eliminate LF in the Philippines. It also seeks to serve as a liaison body among groups and individuals involved or interested in the ELF.
