Butuan City (1 December 2005) -- Members of the national and local media gathered here recently for the very first time in a media tour conducted by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and the Fisheries Resource Management Program (FRMP) of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

Aimed to inform the public of the projects that have been undertaken by FRMP-BFAR, the two-day media tour highlighted the visitation of fish sanctuaries that are located in the municipalities of Cabadbaran and Carmen in Agusan del Norte.

National and local media from print and broadcast were among the members of the panel who interviewed different communities who actively took part in the preservation of fish sanctuaries as well as in the implementation of the fishing law to safeguard the said sanctuaries.

According to Lauro Hinaloc of BFAR-FRMP Caraga, these two municipalities were chosen in order to show the best practices of the organizations in maintaining the fish sanctuaries.

Mayor Jovitte Calo of Carmen town presented the projects of the local government unit. One of the said projects is the preservation of marine resources in their municipality.

Calo said that since they are promoting tourism, her administration is focusing on preserving marine resources. "This is one way of attracting tourists. Since Carmen is blessed with marine resources, then we have to take these as the municipality's treasures that needs to be maintained and kept", Mayor Calo said.

Calo stressed that the municipality of Carmen is seriously implementing the law "because it is only through this that we can achieve our goal", she said. This also shows that Carmen strongly supports the national government in uplifting the economic standards of the country by promoting tourism.

The mayor also said that one of the priority projects of the local government is to promote their market industry particularly on mango production since Carmen is known for having the sweetest mangoes in the entire Caraga region.

At present, Mayor Calo said that the local government is also venturing on banana production as they found out that Carmen is a good place for planting banana.

Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Mayor Calo and Cabadbaran Mayor Herman Libarnes at the end of the day by BFAR-Caraga Assistant Regional Director Nerio Casil and PIA Area Management Office (AMO) Caraga officer-in-charge David Suyao for the support extended in the conduct of the tour.

On the last day of the tour, the participants vowed to support the programs of BFAR-FRMP by submitting commitment plans that will help in the promotion of the project.
