70% of agar-agar plantation destroyed
Dipolog City (1 July 2005) -- The office of the Provincial Agriculturist revealed that 70% of agar-agar plantation in Jose Dalman town, some 70 kilometers South of Dipolog City, was damaged by a kind of moss known as epipehs that is being produced by certain microorganisms under the sea.
Francisco Loloy, in charge of the fisheries section of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist reported that the damage was estimated at P60million, affecting five thousand agar-agar farmers.
Mr. Marco Imperial of Quedancor on the other hand revealed that his office has extended loans amounting to P17 million to some one thousand agar-agar farmers in this town. Quedancor has yet to recover said amount. (PIA)
