BASCO, Batanes, Sept. 30 2002 (PNA) -- Twelve Taiwanese nationals
were convicted recently for violating the provisions of Presidential
Decree 705, otherwise known as the Forestry Code of the Philippines.
Judge Jimmy Henry Luczon, Jr. said the convicts will be
imprisoned for six months and 15 days and were made to pay a fine of
P10,000 each.
Luczon, who is the regional executive judge in Tuguegarao City,
was directed to conduct marathon hearings in this island-province
against the foreign nationals.
The convicts were detained here since April 27, this year,
leaving them more than a month more to suffer in jail, the regional
executive judge said.
The convicts were identified as Lin Xiao Bin, Lin Hen Yiao, Lin
Yan Luan, Lin Luan Xian, Wi Xu Chan, Lee Xu Dong, Lee Zueng Qin, Su
Chuan Wen, Zhao Hua Zhaog, Lu Quian and Lu Zhen Quo, all of the
Fujian province in China; and Chen Shui Tao, a native of Kaoshiung in
Taiwan.
The convicts' motor boat, FB Mibin Yee Bin, was wrecked by the
strong waves during a stormy weather when they reached the Philippine
island earlier this year.
They were later caught conducting illegal logging. (PNA)
