Lucino Family of Tagbilaran, Bohol
« on: June 15, 2010, 05:51:33 AM »
For those who are part of the Lucino Clan.

The Lucinos are originally from Surigao City (originally), some migrating to Southern Leyte and settling in Pintuyan Island. From there, some settled in Cebu and Bohol. From here we have gone abroad; some going to Ireland, UK, Saudi & Middle East, North America (Canada, USA), and in Asia-Pacific Region.

For all those who are of the Lucino Clan. :)

I am linked to the Lucino Clan by way of my father. I am of Lucino Blood.

The Story of Rustico Lucino "Papa Titing"

by: Albrando Lorenzo Lucino Jr "Bran Lorenzo", his grandson

My grandfather was the middle child of a poor family in the island of Pintuyan, Southern Leyte. I don't know if you all know of the situation in Pintuyan, but the island is so poor that the main staple crop is not rice but is camates and maize. As a child, it was difficult for him to live in that the scarcity of food was paramount, and his stepmother was not so kind to the children of my great grandfather, Mr. Bernardo Lucino "Tatay Andot". At age 8, my grandfather, consumed with the passion to survive and to search for a better future and greener pastures, became  stowaway at a local banka and traveled to the island of Cebu. There he worked as a peddler seller, sold papers, and eventually acquired a habit for business, a natural skill that he always had, let alone his natural ingenuity. Time passed where he eventually became owner of many business stands in Cebu and met my grandmother, who was then a college student majoring in Teaching Education. Both fell in love and eventually moved to what is now Tagbilaran, Bohol. Mr. Rustico Aray Lucino would eventually prosper in business tradings and would always remind his children, all seven of them, of their roots and the beauty of hard work and the results of hard work; let alone stressing to them that one's poor and humble beginnings is never a permanent issue, rather, it is by ambition, natural ability, and passion to succeed that dictates one's future. He reminds us that had he not left Pintuyan at age 8 on a banka, his children and grandchildren would have never been.

During the prime of his life, Mr. Rustico Aray Lucino, went back to Pintuyan to visit his father and relatives (many of whom believed that he had died and drowned). And one day my grandfather went to the beaches where he grew up and saw old man fishing, and asked the old man if he knew of a boy named 'TITING'. The old man, said outright, "Yes i knew Titing, he was my son that drowned many years ago." My grandfather already knew that the old man was his father, Bernardo Lucino (Tatay Andot), and without hesitation, my grandfather said, "Nong, ako si Titing."

With disbelief, my great-grandfather did not believe it. He stuck his head in the water for a moment and then raised it up. He still did not believe, shocked. He said to my grandfather, "If this is a dream, please let me not wake up." For all that time, my great grandfather thought my grandfather had died back in 1942 when he left Pintuyan on a banka at age 8. I am sure my greatgrandfather wondered to himself how his son, who was only 8 years old, could have survived outside of Pintuyan for so long and made man out of himself. This story of how they reconnected, to me, is a powerful personal depiction of the Prodigal Son with a slight twist. In this case, the prodigal son comes back to the father not as a beggar, rather, comes back to his father as a man who succeeded in life by shear ambition, hard work, a strong work ethic. To think that a poor boy from Pintuyan could survive by himself without the umbilical tutelage of his father and family, and survived by shear will to succeed and humility. To me, this is an empowering piece.

To me, and to my siblings and cousins, it is a reminder, that hard work begets success. I cherish and ardently adore the memory of my grandfather, without whom, none of us would be alive today. We are reminded that our success and our drive and acquisitions are crowning jewels not only to us, but to our parents, and most of all, to the memory of our grandfather and grandmother, who sacrificed endlessly for their family.

A mustard seed may grow into a large tree, but the roots of that tree runs deeper than the tree itself. It is the roots that supply nutrients and support the tree.

This picture was taken during my visit to Bohol, Philippines this July 2010. A picture of my late grandfather, Mr. Rustico Aray Estrella Lucino.
From what my Uncle Ray and Uncle Roger told me, Papa Titing was 25 when this picture was taken. About my age.

Papa Titing was not a Bol-anon, but 100% Leyteno. He did migrate to Bohol by way of Cebu and eventually made Bohol his home.

Businessman Mr. Rustico Aray Estrella de Lucino. Originally from Barangay Catbawan of Pintuyan, Southern Leyte.

My Papa Titing.  :)

Discovering The Lucino Roots of Panaon Island, Southern Leyte.

The story begins in Leyte. The Lucino Dynasty does not hail originally from Bohol, but are actually native to the lush green of Leyte Province. During my self-awaking experience in the summer of 2010, I was able to visit , for the first time in my life, the native land of my paternal grandmother and paternal grandfather. Both of my father's parents were from Southern Leyte: Padre Burgos and Pintuyan. The trip to Southern Leyte was coordinated via permission from my father and my aunt (both of whom are in the USA) as well as with the help of my Auntie Wella, Uncles Roger and Ray, cousin Jing and a family member, Aurora.

The journey to visit Southern Leyte required our travel by barge from the port in Ubay, which took us to the port in Maasin, Southern Leyte. From Maasin, we drove our Isuzu Crosswind through the towns of Sogod, Bato, Padre Burgos and then ultimately to Panaon Island, which took us directly to the home region of my late grandfather, Anhing Papa Titing.

That night , after arriving to Maasin, my aunts and uncles coordinated a family reunion with the Ebuenga Family, the family that my paternal grandmother came from. For the first time in my life, I was able to meet my grand uncles, distant aunts and uncles, and cousins. All of whom shared with me the memories, beautiful and tearful, of my late grandmother and my late grandfather, of my father's childhood and the experiences that they had regarding the old days. The eyes of my grand uncle, my grandmother's younger brother, kept on focusing at me during the dinner table. He reiterated time and time again, "Rico ka kaayo! Dong, Rico kaayo!" Apparently I bore strict resemblance to my father, whose nickname is "RICO". Pinangga kaayo diay si Daddy sa side ni Mama Luz (my grandmother)!.

The next day, we woke up early in the morning and drove to Panaon Island. The ancestral land of the Lucino Dynasty. The major town in Panaon Island is Panaon, and Pintuyan Town. There is a barangay in Pintuyan Town called "Catbawan". This town is populated with Lucinos, hundreds of my fellow clan mates. Then there is also another family there whom I have blood relation, the Estrella clan.

I felt so much at home in Pintuyan. Tho I never visited the place before, it felt as if i was there before, as if i walked the streets, smelled the fires at night, and saw the sunrises and sunsets here hundreds of times. There was a strong, powerful sense of 'belonging' there. That following day I also met with the local town officials in Pintuyan. The current mayor of the town is an Estrella, a relative of ours. The previous mayor was Mayor Lucino, and before him, was Mayor Cipriano Lucino (my grandfather's 1st degree cousin). I was able to see the newly built hospital , the newly restored St. Michael  Church, the rebuilt (and enlarged) Pintuyan Elementary and High School, and the growing docks. All of which were infrastructural projects by my Lolo Lolong (Mayor Cipriano Lucino). I was impressed.

After all was said and done, I made my way, with assistance from my Tita Magda, the daughter of my late Lolo Piles (Felix Lucino, the older brother of my grandfather), to visit the cemetary in Pintuyan. There I was able to visit the grave of my great-grandfather, the late Mr. Bernardo Lucino. Ning bisita intawn ijang Apo sa Sungay nija. :)
As Tita Magda assisted me in prayer and in lighting the candles for his memory, a strong gush of cool wind blew and stroked my face. Ever so softly.

Tita Magda said to me, "Na lipay imuhang lolo nga ning bisita ka nija, Dong. Lipay to sija nga wa siya kalimtan sa iyang apo sa sungay..."
She was crying when she said this to me. And tears came down my eyes...as well.

It was hard for me to leave Leyte in that trip; as I so wanted to stay longer. Someday, God-willing, I will be able to visit and explore Leyte further.

The pictures I will post are of Panaon Island and Liloan Bridge. This was taken as I was leaving to go back to Bohol. Early in the morning.

The following pictures were acquired through the help of my aunt, Mrs. Maria Lebeth Lucino-Hinkley. These pictures are of my grandfather (Mr. Rustico A. Lucino) and my grandmother (Mrs. Maria Luz E. Lucino) and of their children, friends and family members.

Again, a big thank you to my Ante Beth for helping me out!

I dedicate this poem to my grandfather, Mr. Rustico A. Lucino Sr. Tho I never met you in life, Papa Titing, I know you through the love of family, through the stories they had of you, and you live.  You live in my heart. Always and Forever. You live in me. I am so blessed to have your "agtang" and your "laughter". :)

I still cannot believe that this is a picture of my Father and my Auntie Wella and Aunte Beth.
I cannot help but smile because Mommy Wella looks just like my Cousin Aislynne and that my Father looks like my brother Don in this picture.
Si Ante Beth, i can see that she is so very family oriented, even when she was younger. It is amazing to know that this is 40 years ago...

Hahaha, my late grandfather (Mr. Rustico Lucino) was a lover of photographs and always prioritized family photos. My Auntie Beth told me that Papa Titing was always taking photos of his kids and of his business trips.

Looking at this photo, I could not help but smile because of the color coordination of the kids. Hahaha. Kuyawa lagi to si Papa Titing oy... Oh how I wish I could have met him in life.

My Cousin Mathew and I:

When i went back home in 2010, I found out from family and house help that when I was away from Tagbilaran, my cousin Mathew Lucino would come to visit the house to look for me. When i was told of this, I asked , "why have i not met him yet?"

Ate Aurora said to me, "Ma uwaw man lagi siya nimo, Doy..."

When I found out about this, I drove to his mother's house in Brgy Manga, Tagbilaran. There I met him. I then invited him again the following day to my family's house in Tagbilaran. I requested a picture of the two of us. Ngisi-Ngisi tuod si Ondoy Mathew. hahaha.

I told him, "Ikaw pa, ngano ma uwaw man ka nako? Paryente baya ta ha..." He is a good boy. A smart boy. Aww, Lucino gud... ;)
