By Josh Levs, CNN

(CNN) -- Two bombs struck near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, turning a celebration into a bloody scene of destruction.

The blasts threw people to the ground, killing two and injuring dozens.
Hospitals reported at least 110 people being treated, at least eight of them in critical condition and 14 in serious condition. At least eight of the patients are children.

"Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice," President Barack Obama vowed.

Boston "is a tough and resilient town," he said, adding that Americans will stand by Bostonians "every single step of the way."

'Like a huge cannon'

The terrorist attack, near the marathon's finish line, triggered widespread screaming and chaos, shattered windows and barricades and sent smoke billowing into the air at Copley Square.

They were about 50 to 100 yards apart, officials said.

"It felt like a huge cannon," a witness told CNN about one of the blasts.

Photos from the scene showed people being carried away on stretchers. One man in a wheelchair had blood all over his face and legs.

The bombs shook buildings, sending people to seek shelter under tables, witnesses said.
Federal authorities are classifying the bombings as a terrorist attack, but it's not clear whether the origin was domestic or foreign, a federal law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation said.

A federal law enforcement official told CNN that both bombs were small, and initial tests showed no C-4 or other high-grade explosive material, suggesting that the packages used in the attack were crude explosive devices.

Another explosive device found

Authorities in Boston found at least one other explosive device that they were dismantling, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said.

Davis said a third blast at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library was believed to be related to the marathon bombings, but police later said that incident was believed to be fire-related. The library said all staff and visitors are safe.

It was unclear who may have planted the marathon bombs. There were no credible threats before the race, a state government official said.

There is no suspect in custody, but many people are being questioned, Davis said.

As authorities searched the scene, numerous suspicious packages were found, possibly because people fled the area, leaving items behind. Investigators were checking them.

The Marriott hotel at Copley Place was evacuated as a precaution.

The Lenox Hotel was also evacuated as a precaution, the Boston Globe reported.

'Horrific day'

Crowds were in the area watching the runners take part in the world's oldest annual marathon.
It was also Patriot's Day, commemorating the opening battle of the Revolutionary War.

Within seconds, the festive occasion turned into devastation.

"This is a horrific day in Boston," Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said in a statement.

"My thoughts and prayers are with those who have been injured. I have been in touch with the president, Mayor (Thomas) Menino and our public safety leaders. Our focus is on making sure that the area around Copley Square is safe and secured. I am asking everyone to stay away from Copley Square and let the first responders do their jobs."

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder spoke with FBI Director Robert Mueller and U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, a Justice Department official said.

Holder has directed the full resources of the Justice Department to be deployed to ensure the matter is fully investigated, the official said.

The Federal Aviation Administration placed a flight restriction over the site of the blasts.
Other cities, including New York and Washington, tightened security as a result. Following standard protocol, the White House cleared out an area in front of the West Wing.

"If you see something, say something," Mark Boughton, mayor of Danbury, Connecticut, wrote on Twitter. "All cities will be on a heightened state of alertness per Homeland Security protocols."
Mike Baingon, who works at the Atlantic Fish Company in Boston, said an explosion took place in front of the restaurant and that he was right by the front door at the time.

The explosions occurred at about 2:45 p.m., more than two hours after the first of the race's nearly 27,000 runners had crossed the finish line, CNN Producer Matt Frucci reported.

The race was halted as was subway service into the area.

Runners east of Massachusetts Avenue were directed to Boston Common; those west of Massachusetts Avenue were directed to Kenmore Square, the state's emergency management agency said.
Troops from the Massachusetts National Guard were assisting police as well.

Big question: lone-wolf bomber, or organized terrorism?

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

The first task for investigators in the bombing that rocked Boston on Monday will be determining whether the carnage was the work of an individual or a terrorist organization, experts said.

The scope of the attack at the high-security Boston Marathon doesn’t rule out a lone wolf, said Evan Kohlmann, NBC News’ terrorism analyst.

“There have been individuals who have been capable of doing something like this,” Kohlmann said, pointing to the 1996 Olympics bombing by anti-abortion radical Eric Rudolph.

But Kohlmann said an organized group – domestic or international – could also be the culprit.

“It could be half a dozen different causes, or just a crazy guy,” he said.

NBC News National Security analyst Mike Leiter agreed that even though it was a “pretty sophisticated attack,” the field of suspects is wide open.

“I wouldn’t go down any particular path,” Leiter said on MSNBC.

William Bratton, the former police commissioner of Boston, Los Angeles and New York, said it's important investigators approach the case with an open mind.

"You start with the assumption that you know nothing," he said.

They also need to be on the alert for false claims of responsibility that "will come out of the woodwork," Bratton said.

Kohlmann said forensics from the scene could give investigators important information. If the explosive used was military-grade, that would suggest foreign terrorists, and not someone closer to home jury copying bomb-recipes off the Internet, is responsible.

The most crucial clues, though, will come from closed-circuit camera footage from the area that could show the bomber planting the devices or fleeing the scene, he said.

He noted that in the 2005 London subway bombings, police used the cameras to quickly zero in on the suspects.

“My suspicion is this is something that they will be able to make significant progress on in a very short period of time,” Kohlmann said.

“The record of people who have gotten away with things like this is not very good.”

A fire, and possible explosion, reported at the John F. Kennedy Library in Dorchester, Mass., is being investigated for a potential connection to the blasts that went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday just before 3 p.m.

A Boston Police spokesperson told Talking Points Memo on Monday that an explosive device had gone off at the library. This information was later clarified on Twitter by BPD Public Information Bureau Chief Cheryl Fiandaca, who described the incident as "fire related."

According to the JFK Library's official Twitter account, the fire, which appears to have started in the building's mechanical room, was put out by 6:23 p.m. Monday evening. Staff and visitors were safely accounted for, and no injuries were reported.

Families speak of devastation as details of Boston bombing victims emerge

Martin Richard, eight, Krystle Campbell, 29, and an unnamed Boston University graduate student confirmed to have died

One was an eight-year-old boy enjoying a Patriots' Day holiday outing with his family. Another was a young woman who had watched the Boston Marathon every year since she was child. And the third was a graduate student at Boston University attending the event with friends.

On Tuesday, as the massive federal investigation into the twin bomb blasts continued, details of the three people who died began to emerge. Two of the victims were named: Martin Richard, eight, and Krystle Campbell, 29. The third victim has yet to be identified, but in a statement Boston University said one of its graduate students had been killed.

The details of their deaths are heartbreaking. The Richard family had been trying to get away from the first explosion when they were caught in the second blast. Martin was killed, while his mother, Denise, and six-year-old sister Jane suffered serious wounds in the attack. His father Bill was hit on the legs by metal fragments and ball bearings. Martin's older brother, Henry, was not injured.

"My dear son Martin has died from injuries sustained in the attack on Boston," Bill Richard said in a statement released on Tuesday. "My wife and daughter are both recovering from serious injuries.

"We thank our family and friends, those we know and those we have never met, for their thoughts and prayers. I ask that you continue to pray for my family as we remember Martin. We also ask for your patience and for your privacy as we work to simultaneously grieve and recover. Thank you."

Stephen Lynch, a US congressman for Massachusetts who has known the family for 25 years, said they had just gone for ice cream and were returning to watch the runners finish the race on Boylston Street when the bombs exploded.

"They were looking in the crowd as the runners were coming to see if they could identify some of their friends when the bomb hit," Lynch told the Associated Press.

He added: "Ball bearings are meant as anti-personnel munitions," he said. "They were trying to cause carnage here."

The death has left Dorchester in shock. At the family home on Tuesday, neighbours and friends left flowers and gifts. Candles burned on the front steps, while the word "peace" had been written in chalk.

Neighbour Betty Delorey, 80, said Martin loved to climb the trees and hop the fence outside his home.

"I can just remember his mother calling him, 'Martin!' if he was doing something wrong," she said. "Just a vivacious little kid."

She said: "I'm sick to my stomach. It's hard to say anything, really."

Staff at Martin's former kindergarten described him as a "loving, caring" child. "He was just a great little kid," said Russ Wilson, regional director at the Pope John Paul II Catholic Academy. "Always a smile – loving, caring, great enthusiasm for school, for learning … a very thoughtful little boy."

Martin attended the school between the ages of four and five and left in June 2010. His older brother Henry also went to Pope John Paul II. "It's a tragedy. An absolute tragedy," Wilson said.

The family worshiped at St Ann's church in the area. Jay Richards and his daughter Christina (who are not related to the Richard family) walked up to the church hand-in-hand on Tuesday. Christina had taken her first holy communion with Martin at the church last year.

"It's very sad. You never know how these things are going to affect you. This is certainly affecting us today," Jay Richards said.

Christina took religious education classes at the church with Martin each week, Richards said. He said the Richard family were "nice people, just like anyone else in the community".

Krystle Campbell, 29

Krystle Campbell, 29, from Medford, Massachusetts was identified as one of the victims by her father, William.

He told Yahoo News that she was at the finish line to cheer on her boyfriend, who was running in the marathon.

"My daughter was the most loveable girl," said Campbell. "She helped everybody, and I'm just so shocked right now. We're just devastated."

Her grandmother, Lillian Campbell of Somerville, told the Boston Globe that she had been going to the marathon finish line every year. "She's been doing it since she was a little girl. She didn't miss a marathon, watching it at the finish line."

In a statement on its Facebook page, the Summer Shack restaurant chain where Campbell had worked as a manager, said: "The Summer Shack family is devastated by the loss of our beloved Krystle. No words can describe how much she meant to all of us.

"She was an incredible woman, always full of energy and hard at work, but never too tired to share her love and a smile with everyone. She was an inspiration to all of us. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers."

Third victim

Boston University said it was awaiting permission* from the family of the third victim before releasing the name. The victim had been watching the finish of the marathon with two friends, one of whom – another BU grad student – was also injured.

Robert Hill, the dean of Marsh Chapel, visited the injured student Monday evening and again on Tuesday afternoon. "She is doing well," said Hill. "She has her friends around her, and she will soon have family around her."

Federal investigators involved in one of the largest manhunts in US history have revealed that the Boston marathon bombs that killed three people and injured more than 170 may been made from pressure cookers packed with ball bearings and nails.

Forensic examiners have recovered fragments of black nylon cloth they believe to have come from backpacks used to carry both bombs. They have also found what DesLauriers described as "fragments of nails that could have been contained in a pressure cooker". He added that he was talking about a basic household pressure cooker of the sort found in many kitchens.

huhuhu, maayo gani kay gidukdok ni banana republic ang rubber rim sa takob sa among pressure cooker.  since then it was never the same again, and we have stopped using it.  (niundang na man pod kog pamaligya ug corned beef.)

nabuthan baya ko sa una ug pressure cooker; maayo gani kay layo ko.  maayo pod nga karne baka ray sulod kay wa namo mabatasan nga molata ug lansang ug ball bearings.

ever since, mas maayo pang molata ug karne over a charcoal stove.  biyaan lang human pamahaw, bisitahon duol na paniudto.  di pa ta mabalaka sa electric bills.

Boston Marathon bombs: third victim identified as Chinese student

China is in mourning after the third fatal victim of the Boston Marathon bombing was named as Lu Lingzi, a 23-year-old student from Shenyang in the northeastern province of Liaoning.

Lu Lingzi

By Tom Phillips, Shanghai
17 Apr 2013

“Shenyang girl Lu Lingzi was killed in the Boston bomb blast,” the city’s Liaoshen Evening News wrote on its Twitter-like Weibo account.

Ms Lu-– who used the English name Dorothy Lu in the United States-- was reportedly waiting near the marathon’s finishing line with two friends when two explosions threw the event into chaos.

One of those friends, Zhou Danling, was in a “stable condition” on Tuesday night after undergoing two operations at the Boston Medical Center, according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua. The other friend was unharmed.

The announcement of Ms Lu’s death came after a number of concerned friends and classmates had taken to social media to report she was “missing”. One friend posted a telephone number on Twitter with the message: “Help us find her! We can’t find her!”

The student’s father, Lu Jun, also expressed his fears to a local newspaper on Tuesday. “We haven't been able to contact her. Why didn't she make a call to tell us she's safe?” he told the Shenyang Evening News.

Lu Lingzi was raised in the northeastern province of Liaoning and studied at Shenyang’s Northeast Yucai School.

Yang Yongkun, a former teacher, described her as an “exceptionally clever [and] modest" student.

“I still have a strong recollection of her even though she graduated many years ago,” he told the Shenyang Evening News before Ms Lu’s death was confirmed.

Ms Lu left that school in 2008, according to the Liaoshen Evening News, and secured a place at the Beijing Institute of Technology where she studied international trade.

In 2010, Ms Lu spent two months doing work experience at the Bank of China in her home province, according to an entry on her LinkedIn page. She also spent four months working in Beijing for Deloitte Consulting between 2011 and 2012.

Late last year, after graduating in Beijing, she moved to the United States to study for a Master’s degree in statistics at Boston University.

"New Hampshire is such a great place!” Ms Lu wrote on her Facebook page on October 7 last year. The Boston University student celebrated the start of her American adventure in an online photo gallery called: “New Beginning in BU.”

Towards the start of her time in the United States, she joined a group of international students on an excursion to the Toah Nipi Retreat, a countryside retreat for Christians around 90 minutes drive from Boston. The retreat’s website describes it as “a place to come away, meet God, and be renewed”.

The student also appears to have been a fan of classical music – her Facebook page contains a link to the site of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

By Wednesday morning, friends and micro-bloggers had posted more than 5,000 messages on the student’s Weibo account, underneath a photograph she posted just hours before being killed in Boston. The photograph, of that day’s breakfast, carried the caption: “My wonderful breakfast.”
