Another foreign affairs novato
« on: September 28, 2012, 10:02:14 AM »
republican presidential candidate mitt romney had committed his now famous foreign affairs gaffes in his three foreign trips, which were taken as "nothing short of embarrassment" and "unmitigating disaster".  how these were taken:

Oh, Mitt: those Romney gaffes in full

Boobs, blunders, clangers – whatever you call them, Romney likes to drop them. And he's really outdone himself in London

From criticising the biggest sporting event Britain has held in over 40 years, to "looking out of the backside of 10 Downing Street", Mitt Romney's first foreign trip of his presidential candidacy hasn't gone quite as well as he might have hoped. As the former Massachusetts governor continues to gaffe his way across London, here's a round-up of Romney's red-facers. So far.

On the Olympics: 'There are a few things that are disconcerting'

On Wednesday, the day he arrived in London, Romney was interviewed by NBC's Brian Williams. In a softball warm-up question, Williams asked Romney about his wife's horse, Rafalca, which will be in competition in the dressage, and whether Britain looked ready to host the Olympics. Easy, surely? Not for Romney.

"There are a few things that were disconcerting," Romney said of the event which has been 15 years in the planning and is expected to cost over £9bn.

"The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials – that obviously is not something which is encouraging."

It put a bit of a dampener on Romney's meeting with David Cameron on Thursday. "We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world," the prime minister said, pointedly. "Of course it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere." (Romney ran the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.)

Red-face rating: 8/10. Take that, Romney! Now get that horse out of my sight.

On Ed Miliband: 'Mr Leader'

On to a meeting with the leader of the opposition Labour party, Ed Miliband – a man often criticised for being awkward and lacking a common touch. They should have got on famously. But Romney seemed to forget Miliband's name. "Like you, Mr Leader, I look forward to our conversations this morning," Romney said.

But he reeled it right back in, British-style, with some spontaneous patter about the weather. ("Could not be better. Fortunately the sunshine is out. The warmth is here.") And Miliband's team smoothed it over, recognising that American politicians often refer to each other by their titles.

Red-face rating: 3/10. You're not in North Korea now, mate.

On meeting the leader of MI6: 'Appreciating insights'

The existence of MI6, the international arm of the British secret service, was not officially acknowledged until 1994, 82 years after it was established. But the organisation is still shrouded in secrecy, and its operations – and the diary schedule of its chief – are rarely acknowledged. But here comes Romney, in fully open mode: "I appreciated the insights and perspectives of the leaders of the government here and the opposition here as well as the head of MI6".

Got any pics, Mitt?

At Downing Street: 'Looking out through No 10's backside'

Mitt Romney at No 10 on 26 July 2012. Photograph: Paul Cunningham/Corbis

There are two things you should know before you "look out of the backside of 10 Downing Street", as Mitt Romney did on Thursday.

Firstly, in Britain, "backside" means "ass". As in the part of the body. Secondly, "10 Downing Street" is often used in political reporting as a synonym for a press spokesman for the prime minister, in the same way as "the White House" can say things or have opinions.

Red-face rating: 2/10. A minor linguistic misunderstanding.

On the special relationship: 'Our Anglo-Saxon heritage'

Strictly speaking, this one isn't Romney's fault, but still, the media loves a narrative, and this comment certainly plays into it. Before the trip had even begun, a Romney "adviser" was quoted as saying the Republican contender would be better placed than Barack Obama to sustain the transatlantic relationship with the UK because of a shared "Anglo-Saxon heritage".

The racially-tinged remarks prompted outrage, and cued a stinging attack from vice-president Joe Biden. Andrea Saul, the senior Romney spokeswoman, attempted to row back but the damage was done.

Red-face rating: 8/10. What a way to begin.

A final indignity: bashed by Boris

London Mayor Boris Johnson

The London mayor, Boris Johnson, is not unfamiliar with foot-in-mouth syndrome. So it must have been particularly humiliating to be taunted by Johnson, speaking to a crowd of thousands at an Olympic torch ceremony in Hyde Park.

The Geiger counter of Olympo-mania is going to go zoink! off the scale! People are coming from around the world, and they're seeing us, and they're seeing the greatest country on Earth, aren't they? There are some people who are coming from around the world who don't yet know about all the preparations we've done to get London ready in the last seven years. I hear there's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know whether we're ready. Are we ready?

Red-face rating: 10/10. Time to go home?

Romney’s Gaffes Worsen in Israel

by Andy Borowitz
July 28, 2012

TEL AVIV (The Borowitz Report)—The Mitt Romney Gaffe Express pulled into a new station today, leaving its conductor’s hopes of proving himself to be a nimble statesman in tatters.

Mr. Romney’s troubles began in a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to whom he presented gifts of a HoneyBaked ham and a wheel of cheddar cheese.

After Mr. Netanyahu ordered both gifts removed from his residence and destroyed, Mr. Romney went on to address the Knesset, where he congratulated the Jewish people on building the pyramids.

“Ann and I saw them during a cruise we took to the Middle East, and they were magnificent,” he told the stunned legislators. “As accomplishments go, building the pyramids isn’t up there with saving the Olympics, but you should still feel very, very proud. Nice job.”

Sensing that his remarks were not going over as well as intended, Mr. Romney improvised: “No, really. Incredible building job you did. If any of you would like to work on our house in La Jolla, just say the word. Only thing is, you’ll have to work Saturdays.”

Mr. Romney’s day concluded with an awkward moment at the West Bank, where he attempted to deposit ten million dollars.

Latest Romney gaffe angers Palestinians

By McClatchy Newspapers

WARSAW — Mitt Romney suggested on Monday that Israelis enjoy a better standard of living than neighboring Palestinians do because they have a superior culture and enjoy the “hand of providence.” The remarks set off an outcry from Palestinians, one of whom accused Romney of racism.

The brouhaha was the latest turmoil to rock the Republican presidential candidate’s foreign trek, including a controversy in London on the eve of the Olympics and another in Jerusalem.

In the latest, Romney told about 40 donors at a fundraising event in Jerusalem why he thought Israel’s economy is much stronger than that in territories controlled by the Palestinian Authority. Noting that Israel enjoys the same natural resources — or lack of them — as its neighbors, he said there must be another reason why Israel stood out.

“If you could learn anything from the economic history of the world, it’s this: Culture makes all the difference,” he said, citing the work of historian David Landes, the author of the book “The Wealth and Poverty of Nations.” “As I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things,” Romney added. “One, I recognize the hand of providence in selecting this place.” He told how Jews left Egypt, trusting in God to help them survive in the promised land.

“This is a people that has long recognized the purpose in this place and in their lives that is greater than themselves and their own particular interests, but a purpose of accomplishment and caring and building and serving. There’s also something very unusual about the people of this place.” Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, criticized Romney’s remarks, according to The Associated Press.

“It is a racist statement, and this man doesn’t realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation,” Erekat told the AP. “It seems to me this man lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people. He also lacks knowledge about the Israelis themselves. I have not heard any Israeli official speak about cultural superiority.”

Romney, who’s to conclude his six-day trip on Tuesday with a speech in Warsaw, has been dogged by controversy from the start. In London, he questioned Great Britain’s preparation for the Summer Olympic Games and drew a rebuke from Prime Minister David Cameron. In Jerusalem, he said on Sunday in a widely noted speech that the city was the capital of Israel, a sensitive point in peace negotiations.

Romney wraps up gaffe-prone tour with swipe at Russia

Warsaw — Agence France-Presse
Tuesday, Jul. 31 2012

White House contender Mitt Romney wrapped up a gaffe-prone tour in Poland Tuesday with a swipe about the state of freedom in Russia – and a fresh blunder by an aide who told journalists to “kiss my ass.”

On his first visit behind the old Iron Curtain, the Republican nominee vowed his commitment to close ties with Poland, which still has a testy relationship with Moscow more than two decades after the fall of communism.

Hailing his hosts as “an example and defender of freedom”, Mr. Romney said: “In Russia, once-promising advances toward a free and open society have faltered.”

Earlier this month, Mr. Romney criticized President Barack Obama’s administration for its “abandonment of friends” in a region still wary of Russia – a country he once described as America’s “number one geopolitical foe”.

Poland, a country of 38 million which made a peaceful, if difficult, transition from communism in 1989, is now an economically flourishing pillar of the EU and NATO and has supplied troops for the US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Poland has no greater friend and ally than the people of the United States,” said Mr. Romney. “I believe it is critical to stand by those who have stood by America... and it is with solidarity that America and Poland face the future.”

But the final leg of the three-stop tour, aimed at burnishing Mr. Romney’s foreign policy credentials ahead of the November presidential election, was marred by a verbal attack on journalists by one of his top aides.

His spokesman Rick Gorka lost his cool when journalists pressed Mr. Romney during a solemn visit to a World War II memorial in Warsaw over the gaffes that have plagued him during his visits to Israel and Britain.

Mr. Gorka told the journalists to “kiss my ass” and to “shove it” as they chased Mr. Romney for answers, before calling them half an hour later to apologise.

In Britain, Mr. Romney – who organised the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City – triggered outrage after he questioned London’s security readiness for the Games which opened on Friday.

And in staunch ally Israel, he angered the Palestinians for endorsing Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state and saying that Israeli “culture” helps them succeed economically.

In Gdansk on Monday, Mr. Romney had won praise from Nobel peace laureate Lech Walesa, whose Solidarity trade union led the struggle against communist rule in the 1980s.

But Solidarity distanced itself from Mr. Romney’s visit, saying it was “in no way involved” in inviting him to Poland.

“Regrettably we learned from our American friends at AFL-CIO headquarters who represent over 12 million workers about Mitt Romney’s backing of attacks on trade unions and worker’s rights,” it said.

Poles nevertheless have long displayed an affinity for Mr. Romney’s Republican party thanks to late US “Cold Warrior” president Ronald Reagan’s staunch support for Solidarity and his uncompromising approach to Moscow.

“In a turbulent world, Poland stands as an example and defender of freedom,” Mr. Romney said Tuesday, pointing to Belarus, Syria and the Arab world as well as Venezuela and Russia as countries still struggling for liberty.

Earlier this month he voiced doubt over the legitimacy of the March election which returned President Vladimir Putin to the Kremlin and accusing Russia of arming the Damascus regime.

Mr. Obama’s administration has been criticised in Poland for revamping an anti-missile shield project planned for the region against rogue states by its Republican predecessor but had raised hackles in Russia.

A staunch free marketeer, Romney hailed EU member Poland’s reform-oriented economy, which has flourished since the demise of communism while others in Europe are mired in debt.

“The world should pay close attention to the transformation of Poland’s economy,” said Mr. Romney, who met Poland’s top political leaders during his trip.

“A march toward economic liberty and smaller government has meant a march toward higher living standards, a strong military that defends liberty at home and abroad, and an important and growing role on the international stage.”
