Respectable members, friends, colleagues, fellow intellectuals,
I wanted to share a viewpoint that was brought to my attention by some friends recently in a lively conversation this weekend.
The concept I am talking about is the human tendency to immortalize one's name and memory. We know that throughout human history from the beginning of human civilization as early as Ancient Mesopotamia, to the Hellenistic Greece, Pharonic Egypt, The Roman Empire, the Chinese Dynasties, the Indus Valley Civilizations (Chandra Gupta Maurya, Mogul, Ashokic), to the Khmer Civilizations in South East Asia, to the Azteca and Ahuatl civilizations of Meso-America to the European Absolute Kings etc.
Each one of these civilizations had rulers: Emperors, Kings, Queens, Princes, Barons, who fashioned images of themselves as to beautify their memory so as to immortalize their legacy for future generations to remember. In the attempt to preserve their lasting contributions to their respected societies.
I personally find it quite interesting, that all these civilizations, share that distinct humanitic concept. The need to preserve their name and memory even after their mortal lives bows to the touch of death. It is, inevetibly genuine. Existentialism.
Human beings, throughout the continuum of God's Green Earth and Creation, are the only ones that are so obsessed in their namesake's preservation. The need to last the ages and to never be forgotten. The need to immortalize their name.
What are your views on this?
Do share.
Best,
Lorenzo
