The leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland has said he is deeply sorry and ashamed about the widespread sexual abuse of children by priests.

Cardinal Sean Brady also apologised for the way the Church covered up the abuse, which happened in Dublin.

He spoke after an Irish government report revealed abuse over decades, a systematic cover-up by the Church, and a lack of action by the Irish police.

The Church put its own reputation ahead of the welfare of children, it found.

The Report of the Commission of Investigation into the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin covered a period from 1975 to 2004.

Some offending priests were shifted from parish to parish, leaving them free to abuse again.

Cardinal Brady apologised to the victims and their families.

"I am deeply sorry and I am ashamed," he said.

The report also said that state authorities facilitated the cover-up by allowing the Church to operate outside the law. - BBC

It seems we cannot expect the church heirarchy to take action voluntarily on its errant priests, since they feel that dealing with this crime publicly will erode their moral authority. Just look at the case of Skelton. It behooves the bishop to address the problem publicly, since his attention has already been called to the history of this priest. But it seems that he considers the hallowed moral ground of the church to be of greater preeminence than the welfare of the youth. We're not in the age of friars anymore. The public should hold the church more accountable for the shenanigans of robed scalawags.

God, who else?

It behooves the bishop to address the problem publicly, since his attention has already been called to the history of this priest. But it seems that he considers the hallowed moral ground of the church to be of greater preeminence than the welfare of the youth.

It would appear, then, that we should skip the mediation of the Church and try to speak directly to God.

Ireland should be ashamed not only of the widespread abuse of children by Irish priests but also of the widespread abuse of children by their own Irish fathers.
