I was born in the Philippines but grew up in the United States, raised here and think like any other typical American. One thing that I notice about Filipino parents and the older Filipino generation here in the USA is their inviting nature.
If I go over my Tita's house, they always offer food, and it is rude to reject, as prescribed in Filipino Culture. So we acquiesce.
In the United States, the American people maintain a "MYOB" (Mind your own business) attitutde, especially in the Tri-State Area where I live. New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania Region. Any large urban area will have that 'hustle and bustle' attitude and Ive noticed the impersonal atmosphere in large American cities namely: Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York City.
Americans are very open, direct. To your face. Filipinos (in the philippines or recent immigrants) are more subtle, permissive, obeiscant. They say something but mean the other.
Americans love to shake hands. American Men shake hands when meeting new people. A firm handshake indicates confidence, assertiveness and control. The antithesis for weak handshakes.
We love our sports. American Football, Baseball, Hockey, Volleyball, racing, etc. All are popular American pasttime.
Man and Football and Beer is synonymous. hehehehe!
-----------
I do admire the Filipino Mano Po.
It is, in my point of view, the epitime of familial piety.
I admire both cultures. Filipino and American.
As a Filipino-American, ive developed an appreciation for both.
Pride in my American patriotism, but respect for the culture of the MotherCountry (Philippines).
