I just learn today nga duol raman diay mi sa farm ni Howard G. Buffet anak ni Warren Buffet ang pinakarich nga tawo sa kalibutan.Yes Howard Buffet farm here in Central Illinois near Tower Hill in Shelby Country .Naglabay labay mi sa iya farm nga walay idea.He is very humble person sa tinuod lang.He serve as board of director in ADM(Archer Daniel Midland)one of the worlds largest agricultural processor of soybeans,corn,wheat and cocoa,also board of director of Sloan machinery mostly they sale John Deere machinery like tractors,combine harvestors ug part.We frequently visit Sloans kay magpalit ug parts sa among farm machinery.Who knows nagtagbo na mi ani niya sa mga farm show wala lang ko idea hehehe.Si Warren Buffet iya daddy ang nagpalit sa farm unya iya girentahan but I think he already buy it from his dad.The farm plat book says he own 700 acres of farm ground.He does missionary work teaching third world country how to grow food and he love photography and africas big game.John Deere mechanics joke that he does not have to unhooked his implement because he has a tractor for everyone of them.Ganahan gyud daw ni si Howard Buffet ug big machinery.Bisan naa na sila billion humble pa gihapon.

Palm plantation is a monoculture form. Kosog ang gamit sa mga chemicals, and residue didto dayon sa ilawom sa yuta, this is ecologically detrimental in the long run. Since business are profit oriented, they donÂ´t bother.
Ang makalolo-oy ang mga pobreng mamumoyo nga silingan ni-aning plantation.

the establishment palm oil plantations in bohol was advanced by FCB officials in early 2000 so that farmers will avail of the lending window that they opened for oil palm production. i think even the provincial government encouraged farmers to plant palm oil. of course, the proponents (FCB and some government officials) did not tell farmers how destructive oil palm farming is to the soil and even to crops of farm lands that border these plantations. people should simply stop planting palm oil and go back to coconut farming. after all, both their end products are basically used for the same purpose. and additionally, unlike palm oil production which is monoculture in nature, coconut plantations can be used for integrated farming systems wherein other crops such as cacao, banana, and other crops can be grown inderneath the coconut groves and thereby maximizing farm production.

There are organizations here in Germany who supports coconut planters, sad to say they are more concentrated in Mindanao because of the vast area.
Oil palm production is now passe´. The world market is asking for more copras, coconut oil for cosmetics and food industries. Husks are uses for rugs and carpets, etc.
What is the function of Phil Coconut industry? Is this still existent?

manay tess: to answer your question, i used to work for a consulting firm in a foreign-funded project implemented by the depatment of agrarian reform where we provide support services to agrarian reform beneficiaries such as crop production, animal dispersal, etc.. for a time i was assigned as site coordinator for agusan del sur where i saw first hand the status of oil palm production in the area. there are plantations here that are already 30 years old and given the time this industy has been going on in the area, not many farmers have been convinced to follow suit given the extent of the area planted to oil palm, the existence of an oil mill serving the area notwithstanding. this is because they have seen the disadvantages of this monoculture crop including the fact that rats live in the trees all year round because they like to eat the fruits. when the rice plantations nearby are about to be harvested, the rats come down and raid the ricelands. when there are done and there's nothing to eat anymore, they go back to the palm trees. also, there are studies that show that land that has been planted to oil palm will not have sufficient soil nutrients to grow anything for about 20-30 years long after the trees have been cut, which is a very depressing prospect. dapat in bohol, they should just go on with the coconut industry which has been going on for a long time than go into a new industry that doesn't have a market anymore. you know, back in early 2000, i met an australian consultant who has been living in kuala lumpur and he said back then that malaysia has a huge problem of disposing its large inventory of palm oil because there was very little demand in the world market. mahathir mohammad who was then the prime minister of malaysia was even telling his technical people to fast track the invention of a system that would make use of palm oil as biofuel so that their inventory will not all go to waste. it was crazy that it was during this time when malaysia had a big problem of disposing its large stock of palm oil that FCB (with the help of government officials) would promote the establishment of oil palm plantations... speaking of PCA, there are still existent. i don't know how involved they are in the coconut industry in bohol as they should because bohol has a large area planted to coconut. i do know that they are involved in controling the cutting of coconut for lumber purposes to keep the coconut tree population in sufficient numbers. in mindanao, they are involved even in promoting the establishment of coco industries other than copra production. this include the production of coco-based food products such as virgin coconut oil, coco candy bars, as well as coco coir production which produces soil erosion control materials (made out of bunot) that has a huge export market. dapat boholanos should be doing all these as well.

sure, manay tess. we can this discussion about coconut production. it maybe a traditional produce, even old, but it still has a lot of potential to make money especially now that there are additional uses that have been "discovered" from out of coconut by-products. in bohol, coconut husks are probably rotting away but in mindanao, it is made into an excellent export product and is making a lot of money for coco farmers.

that's good to know. there wasn't anything like that when i left bohol some years ago. boholanos can actually do more with coconut. there's coco sugar production.. VCO. they can transform coconut plantations as integrated farms and incorporate bananas, pineapples and cacao in their farms. does anyone know that the going price for cacao is around php 120.00 per kilo? the market for cacao is quite big too. local demand is supplied only with around 30% from local sources.
