Using contentment in order to avoid working harder
« on: December 08, 2011, 05:38:26 AM »
Contentment sometimes represents the easy way out
Sometimes people deliberately deceive themselves by feigning contentment in order to avoid working harder and taking more risks to go for what they really want. Dont try to fake being contented when youre not. If you want to dream, dream big.

The success of any long term business venture depends on the way the higher management or the owner itself, how to instill work attitudes and culture amongst its officers. Normally, company officers are not allowed to linger within their comfort zones. In fact higher management always insinuate discomforts amongst its officers by raising up intriguing issues (fictitious or real) of company's concern. At times officers are made to engage in healthy battles (of wits and brains) within the company structure. This is one way of saying that convenience is not allowed in any business endeavor which draws down to the way how an individual person has to fulfill his dream for the future. It is nowhere a hermitian rule but in most cases successful people dreamt big and offered themselves the bigger chunk of self sacrifice to achieve their dreams. When one sacrifices himself for any achievable goal he may have, there is no room for convenience along the path because every inch of that path are seemingly unsolvable obstacles  needing mental alertness  and physical strength to surmount each and move forward towards achieving that goal.

In the pursuit of academic and professional excellence, one can never be fully content.

Addendum:

Almost all organizational behavior theories have the implicit or explicit objective of making organizations more effective. Indeed, organizational effectiveness is considered the "ultimate dependent variable" in the organizational behavior. As organizations meet the uncertainties of environmental factors, leaders of organizations must be able to define organizational effectiveness.

One would ask how would an organization define effectiveness? An organization is considered effective when they have a good fit with their external environment, when their internal subsystems are configured for a high-performance workplace, when they are learning organizations, and when they satisfy the needs of key stakeholders.

In other words, there is nothing wrong in self improvement. I had a classmate back in medicine proper who was 47 years old when he started medical school. While most of us were 23 or 24 years old entering Medical School, here was one guy who was 47. Prior to medical school he was an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) for some 25 years. When I asked him, "what encouraged you to go to medical school at 47?", he answered back, "Because I always wanted to become a Doctor and now that my kids are finished college, I could now improve myself. It was always my life dream to be a Doctor."

I was inspired by his answer. His decision to go back to school, specifically Medical School, is an example of self improvement and fulfilling a life goal. He was never content in being an EMT.

That's exactly right Doc. All individuals have a childhood dream. Often, one's dream is prompted by family conditions and environmental influence. In example, when a child is raised from a poor family and hostile environment, he is prompted to dream a wealthy man someday to alleviate the situation he experiences. He may strive to seek a higher level of learning to hone himself to achieve his goal or any available means of his choice. However, in the process, there is no room for convenience and complacency because one has to struggle the hardest way to achieve that dream.

A noble man compares and estimates himself by an idea which is higher than himself; and a mean man, by one lower than himself. The one produces aspiration; the other ambition, which is the way in which a vulgar man aspires. --Marcus Aurelius

I agree with that statement, A Layman, "When a child is raised from a poor family and hostile environment, he is propted to dream a wealthy man someday to alleviate the situation he experiences." This is so true in that we all have a sense of existentialist self-improvement. I believe that all humans want to better themselves either it be in their day to day lives or through their progeny. An example of a day to day self improvement would be a carpenter who works 50 hours a week and gets paid 20 dollars an hour. So technically, he makes $1000 a week, which equates to $4000 a month. However, after taxes, he makes $3000 a month. Then he has to pay his house mortgage, electricity, gas, internet, health insurance, food expenses, children's expenses. So that leaves him with about $500 a month on savings. Will this man be content with only $500 a month on savings? No. We all are aware of the circumstances that come at us in life, and it is only prudent to save. So this man elects to work 60 hours a week; an additional 40 hours a month, which means an additional $800 saved. By increasing work hours, he can save ~ $1000-$1200 a month. In one year, he can theoretically save up to $10,000 - $12,000.

In regards to long term aspiration; every father or mother would like their children to do better for themselves than they. It is preprogrammed in the human brain as an offspring's success means genetic longevity.

This reminds me of a joke,

Inside a little classroom, a teacher taught value education to her pupils.

Teacher: Mark, anong kurso ang gusto mo pag laki?

Mark: Gusto ko mam maging doktor.

Teacher: Bakit isang dokto ang gusto mo?

Mark: Upang gamutin ko ang mga sakit ng aking KAPWA.

Teacher: Very good si Mark. Ikaw naman Lourdes?

Lourdes: Mam, gusto kong maging nurse.

Juan: Mam gusto kong maging KAPWA.

Teacher: Ha? Bakit naman gusto mong maging KAPWA?

Juan: Aron hayahay mam!!!

Teacher: ?!#@*#

When one sacrifices himself for any achievable goal he may have, there is no room for convenience along the path because every inch of that path are seemingly unsolvable obstacles  needing mental alertness  and physical strength to surmount each and move forward towards achieving that goal.

Oftentimes, one's dream is challenged by the reactions of other people. Negative reaction includes debasing one's ability to fulfill that dream like , "Paano ka makapag-aral, wala namang hanapbuhay magulang mo? Magtanim ka na lang ng kamote, may aanihin ka pa.", a demeaning side comments that may dampen one's enthusiasm to achieve one's goal. Yet, most dreamers develop the safety net to shield themselves from being pulled down by others (mga talangka!) or, against a hostile environment. They learn so fast of becoming more resilient 'against all odds' even before they obtain their diplomas.
