Reflection during a jail visit

Setting aside prejudices, I visited a friend  in the city jail today who was apprehended early morning for alleged drug pushing. When I saw the small cell with the inmates inside, I remember the time when I was assigned in the prison ministry way back 1998-1999.  With the many different immersions and ministries I experienced, from the Pampanga farmers to the laguna de bay fisherfolks, prostituted women, orphanages, payatas families, informal settlers, youth ministry,  mental health patients, lepers, orthopaedic patients, I can say the prison ministry was by far the most difficult one for me.  I remember walking inside the Quezon City jail and a year later walking inside the Cagayan de Oro city jail and I always had that feeling of deadfulness. My religious community and religious superiors would always tell me to process my feelings.

Today, when I saw the inmates up close sharing a small cell,  I had mix feelings. That feeling of dread once again. I wanted  to say something to my friend but I did not know what to say. I instead listened and in doing so I realized that life indeed is  a mystery. To live this mystery is a choice and every choice comes with responsibility.

Romans 10:9-10
"If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."
