Italy's Mount Etna erupted in spectacular fashion on Wednesday night, hurling flames and ash high into the night sky, and unleashing streams of lava. None of the villages on the lower slopes of the volcano were affected. Located on the island of Sicily, Mount Etna is Europe's tallest and most active volcano. It's last significant eruption was in 1992.

Flood waters receded in some places in Australia on Friday. Here in the Brisbane suburb of West End, Andrew Taylor (second row) and his friends throw themselves into the clean up -- with a quick stop for a group photo around a wrecked piano. Much of Australia's third largest city was submerged in the floods that have ravaged Queensland in recent weeks. An estimated 26,000 homes have flooded, leaving thousands homeless.

A park bench on the Maaraue peninsula on the Rhine River near Wiesbaden was almost completely submerged on Monday. Many parts of Germany have suffered severe flooding in the last 10 days due to a combination of rainfall and snow melt from the unseasonably warm January weather.

Powerful gusts of wind hurl plumes of water onto the boardwalk of Lake Geneva in Switzerland on Friday. The lake is often subject to strong winds that produce stormy conditions and large waves. Although it is only 14 kilometers (8.6 miles) wide at its broadest point, it reaches a depth of 310 meters (1017 feet) in some places.

Apparently it's just your average pedestrian in a Stetson, but Reuters photographer Stefan Wermuth snapped an image in a London stairwell so powerful that it evokes a scene reminiscent of a 1940s film noir mystery movie.

Indian army soldiers show off their death-defying stunt skills in Delhi on Wednesday. Resplendent in white jumpsuits and wielding a bow and arrow, the soldiers were amongst hundreds of colorful displays that entertained the huge crowds during the India's 62nd Republic Day parade. Republic Day is a celebration of India's independence from British rule and the adoption of the country's constitution.

thanks, bai lorenz. truth be told, i had to be there to pitch in for the original archer. he shot himself in the foot during practice, that's why. as his trainor, i had no choice. the show must go on, y'know. tekret: hubag was a noisy trainee.

This undated photo released by environmental action group Greenpeace on Wednesday shows a network of tracks in an area that has been clear-cut for oil palm plantations on the Indonesian island of Borneo. Indonesia has vast areas of forest, but they are rapidly diminishing because of industrial logging and clearance for palm oil and paper production. The shrinking forests are also accelerating climate change and affecting the country's biodiversity.

It looked a little chaotic on the piste at the 2011 Ski World Championships at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany on Wednesday. But these industrious helpers were simply preparing the slalom slope to ensure perfect conditions for the athletes. Their hard work was surely appreciated by the French team, who beat Austria and Sweden in the team event.

Emilio Strapasson of Brazil competes in the FIBT Skeleton World Championship on Thursday in KÃ¶nigssee in the German state of Bavaria. Skeleton is similar to luge, but rather than travelling feet first, the person lies on their stomach and goes down the track head first. The KÃ¶nigssee bobsleigh and luge track was the first permanent, artificial-ice track in the world when it was built in 1968. It was renovated for the 2011 FIBT world championships and is now one of the most modern in the world.

Celebrations are underway across the globe on Tuesday for the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. Italian women are demonstrating against philandering Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Filipino women are rallying for a new reproductive health law which would provide poor women increased access to birth control, and flower vendors everywhere have laid in an extra supply. Even these female prisoners in Cambodia are getting in on the act. The Cambodian NGO Licadho is providing food to imprisoned women and children in honor of International Women's Day.

An estimated 1,000 people converged on Sunday at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate for a pillow fight flash mob as the city celebrated the transition from gray winter to sunny spring. "We're driving the winter away, bring your pillows along," organizers had written in an Internet posting. The mobsters not only had a good time -- they also left a large coating of feathers that could be seen across Pariser Platz, the square in front of the Brandenburg Gate, on Monday morning.

The plane was shot down during the Battle of Britain in 1940 and was hidden for years by shifting sands at the bottom of the sea. A worker peers out a window last week at a bike shop in Altlandsberg near Berlin in the eastern German state of Brandenburg. When people in the town need to get rid of their bikes because they can't use them anymore, they often bring them to Peter Horstmann's used bicycle shop. His warehouse had begun overflowing with junk bikes that could no longer be repaired, so he came up with the idea of using some 160 bicycles to decorate the side of a building. The junk cycle art project has since become something of a tourist attraction in the town.

Visitors view an apple tree festooned with 9,800 Easter eggs in the city of Saalfeld, in the eastern German state of Thuringia on Friday. Retiree Volker Kraft, 75, has decorated the tree with homemade eggs every Easter since 1965. Last year, the tree attracted more than 13,000 visitors.
