Floating Bridge

Commuters cross the Buriganga River on a floating boat bridge in Dhaka, Bangladesh. When rampant-growing water hyacinth prevented boats from moving freely on the river, a group of boatmen came up with a bright idea. They made this floating bridge by connecting 34 wooden dinghies together and are charging a small fee to cross.

A statue of Mahatma Gandhi gets a wash on the eve of the anniversary of his birth in Jammu, India. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on Oct. 2, 1869 in Porbandar near Mumbai. He is often referred to as "Mahatma," a name which means "Great Soul" in Sanskrit. Saturday would have been his 141st birthday. Every year India celebrates the day with a national holiday. Gandhi was famed for his simple diet and lifestyle and in his honor no alcohol or meat is sold or consumed on the day.

Two thrill-seekers take a leap of faith from the 421-meter-high Kuala Lumpur Tower seconds before releasing their parachutes on Thursday. Base jumping is an extreme sport where parachutists jump from tall buildings or cliffs instead of from aeroplanes. B.A.S.E stands for Building, Antenna, Span and Earth which are the categories of fixed objects from which such adrenalin junkies leap. Around 120 professional base jumpers from 22 countries around the world took part today in the annual KL Tower International Jump in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The KL tower is the sixth tallest TV tower in the world, the largest being the Canton Tower in Guangzhou, China at 610 meters.

A spooky spectre looms out of the fog in the Tatra mountains in Poland -- but it isn't a ghost. It's an example of a rare optic phenomenon which occurs when an observer standing at a higher altitude sees his own shadow cast onto cloud below him. As here, the shadow is often encircled with colored rings caused by diffraction of light by water droplets. The phenomenon is called a 'Brocken spectre' after a peak in the Harz mountains in Germany, where the first recorded sighting occured in 1780. According to an old mountain climbers' superstition, whoever sees a Brocken spectre will one day die in the mountains.

Fog hangs low over a field near Hopkinsville in the US state of Kentucky. A line of cattle make their way through the early morning mist. Storms passed through the area on Tuesday, bringing cooler temperatures and fog to low-lying areas. The area is famous as the site of the "Hopkinsville Goblins" UFO sighting in 1955, when locals claimed to have been visited by little green men.

He has already tried to break speed records for the world's fastest piece of furniture -- it was a couch -- but Perry Watkins was not satisfied. In September the British inventor took to the race track with a speeding dining table. His motorized meal, named "Fast Food," managed to reach speeds of up to 182 kilometers per hour (113 miles per hour). The table, which is laid for a meal, sits atop the modified body of a sports car.

Watkins, who formerly held the record for the world's smallest car, as listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, showed off his speedy culinary cart at a press preview for the Essen motor show, to be held from Nov. 27 to Dec. 5.

Wooden crosses planted at the newly opened Royal British Legion Wootton Bassett Field of Remembrance in southwest England. The new memorial, opened on Nov.9, pays tribute to the British servicemen and women killed in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Prince Harry attended the opening ceremony and planted a cross for Lance Corporal of Horse Jonathan Woodgate, who was killed while on foot patrol in Helmand province earlier this year. In the UK, the red poppy is worn in the run up to Armistice Day on November 11, which commemorates the end of World War One. The poppy was chosen as a symbol after the flower grew over the battle fields in Belgium and France after the war.

The country has been experiencing an extremely turbulent autumn. Heavy storms lashed Spain's Mediterranean coast back in October, flooding homes and causing two weather-related deaths.

A student at St. Andrews University in Scotland is covered in foam while taking part in the traditional "raisin weekend" foam fight to celebrate the start of the academic year. Every November, first year students are initiated with a wild weekend involving alcohol, crazy costumes and foam. Each new student is assigned an "academic mother" and "academic father" who will show them the ropes in adapting to university life. Traditionally, the new students give a pound of raisins to their elders as a token of gratitude for their guidance. In return they receive a receipt in Latin, often written on an absurd object, like an old car or baby clothing. In recent times, the raisins have been replaced with a bottle of wine and the traditional event held on campus at St. Salvator's Quad has taken a messy turn.

The west African nation's long-delayed presidential poll went ahead smoothly on Wednesday in spite of some street clashes (threatened unrest was official reason postponing the election). But it failed to produce a clear winner. A run-off between Gbagbo and his liberal challenger, Alassane Ouattara, is set for Nov. 28.

Pedestrians in central Delhi, India, were stopped in their tracks Friday by an aerial ballet taking place high above them. The Project Bandaloop dancers, who specialize in vertical dance and aerial ballet, are based in San Francisco. The idea came from founder Amelia Rudolph, who wanted to combine rock climbing and modern dance. The troop performed on the mirrored walls of the 120 foot high (36 meters) LIC building in the Indian city.

High-water alarms sounded in Venice on Friday morning as seasonal winter floods reached their highest level. Over half of the legendary Italian island city was under water. The heavy flooding is due to a combination of persistently bad weather and the usual tide coming in to the Venice lagoon off the Adriatic, the news agency AFP reported.

The waters surrounding the 7,100 islands of the Philippines are home to a rich variety of marine life including around 2,400 species of fish. The pink dawn sky provided a breathtaking backdrop for the Russian Soyuz TMA-20 rocket booster on Monday as it travelled to its launch pad at the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The space rocket is scheduled for lift-off on Dec. 15, 2010, carrying a crew of three astronauts: Catherine "Cady" Coleman from the US, Italian Paolo Nespoli and Russian Dmitry Kondratyev. The autonomous flight to the International Space Station (ISS) should take two days. Built by the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada and 11 European countries, the ISS is one of the largest international scientific projects ever conceived.

A total lunar eclipse on Monday evening coincided with the arrival of the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere for the first time since 1638, casting a shadow on the earth for a full 72 minutes. This picture shows the lunar eclipse above the Teide volcano in the Teide National Park on Tenerife, one of the Spanish Canary Islands. The volcano is the highest peak in Spain. The last time it erupted was in 1798.

A dog peered out of a porthole on the side of a ship on the Yenisei River in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk. It is likely he quickly withdrew -- the temperatures dropped to minus 26 degrees Celsius (minus 14.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in Krasnoyarsk on Thursday. The Yenisei River is one of the longest rivers in Asia, rising in the borderland between south-central Russia and Mongolia and flowing along the edge of the West Siberian Plain to the Kara Sea.

A collapsed deer was rescued from the frozen surface of a lake by the fire department in Voerde in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia on Wednesday. The fire brigade used ropes to pull the exhausted but uninjured animal to safety. The lake near the town of Voerde is completely frozen over, and the fire team also had to perform a number of animal rescues on Tuesday.

Ice diving is all part of the training for Istvan Papp, a member of a Hungarian special rescue team. In a frozen pond in Nyireghaza, 245 kilometers (152 miles) east of Budapest, Papp and his team mates had to cut through ice with a knife and learn how to break through a thick layer of ice from underneath as part of their emergency training.

Italy's Mount Etna erupted in spectacular fashion on Wednesday night, hurling flames and ash high into the night sky, and unleashing streams of lava. None of the villages on the lower slopes of the volcano were affected. Located on the island of Sicily, Mount Etna is Europe's tallest and most active volcano. It's last significant eruption was in 1992.

Flood waters receded in some places in Australia on Friday. Here in the Brisbane suburb of West End, Andrew Taylor (second row) and his friends throw themselves into the clean up -- with a quick stop for a group photo around a wrecked piano. Powerful gusts of wind hurl plumes of water onto the boardwalk of Lake Geneva in Switzerland on Friday. The lake is often subject to strong winds that produce stormy conditions and large waves. Indian army soldiers show off their death-defying stunt skills in Delhi on Wednesday. Resplendent in white jumpsuits and wielding a bow and arrow, the soldiers were amongst hundreds of colorful displays that entertained the huge crowds during the India's 62nd Republic Day parade. Republic Day is a celebration of India's independence from British rule and the adoption of the country's constitution.

Emilio Strapasson of Brazil competes in the FIBT Skeleton World Championship on Thursday in KÃ¶nigssee in the German state of Bavaria. Skeleton is similar to luge, but rather than travelling feet first, the person lies on their stomach and goes down the track head first. The KÃ¶nigssee bobsleigh and luge track was the first permanent, artificial-ice track in the world when it was built in 1968. It was renovated for the 2011 FIBT world championships and is now one of the most modern in the world.

A worker peers out a window last week at a bike shop in Altlandsberg near Berlin in the eastern German state of Brandenburg. When people in the town need to get rid of their bikes because they can't use them anymore, they often bring them to Peter Horstmann's used bicycle shop. His warehouse had begun overflowing with junk bikes that could no longer be repaired, so he came up with the idea of using some 160 bicycles to decorate the side of a building. The junk cycle art project has since become something of a tourist attraction in the town.

A cow herder in southern Sudan has painted his face with ash from burned cow dung. The manure is burned in the evenings to repel mosquitoes and cow keepers paint themselves every morning during the ritualistic cleaning of the cows. Southern Sudan remains a violent place and cows are a frequent target for theft. On April 22, this cow herder and his companions managed to prevent an attack on their herd.

Forget painting the town red -- the residents of Juzcar, a small village of some 250 people in Spain's Malaga province, went for a nice shade of blue! Sony Pictures chose to host an event promoting "The Smurfs" 3D movie in Juzcar -- on the condition that the facades of the village's buildings be covered with blue paint. Only one resident refused to have his house painted, while the others proved to be enthusiastic: Many "smurf-ified" themselves on the day of the event, donning blue body paint plus the signature smurf uniform of white pants and cap. Sony has promised to repaint the town white after the premiere.

More than 3,500 Palestinian children play with brightly colored parachutes at a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) event on June 30 in the southern Gaza Strip. The children are attending a six-week summer camp organized by the UNRWA during which they will try to break world records in a number of activities -- including world's biggest parachute game, which they managed for the third year in a row. "The children of Gaza have shown again that they can be the best in the world," Sebastien Trives, UNRWA's deputy director of programs in Gaza, said in a statement. "These events raise the spirits and aspirations of the children and give them a real sense of accomplishment and hope. They can achieve special things when given the opportunity."
