Young Filipino actress KC Concepcion was chosen by United Nations to be the Ambassador Against Hunger of the World Food Program.
KC's first assignment was in Pikit, North Cotabato, where she distributed take-home rice and took part in onsite feeding and distribution of warm formulated meals in selected schools last February 18.
Hot meals are given to 16,000 children in 277 schools and daycare centers. The WFP has increased enrolment by 40 percent and has sustained attendance by 94 percent in assisted schools.
Before she was chosen for this U-N role, KC went on a three-month screening process and got approved by three offices—Rome, Vatican, and Thailand. She's only the third to be chosen from Southeast Asia.
"I am so happy to be connected with the right channels talaga. It's quite a feat to feed hungry children everyday and help resolve conflict and keep them in school, Hopefully, we can get the government to implement feeding programs properly and efficiently too by setting a big example on how things should be done. The problem is that the feeding program of our government limits to 19 days of feeding out of 80. So it becomes more symbolic. We better do something to engage the youth too apart from raising awareness to those who can donate," Filipino actress said.
KC stressed "that the work of the WFP to put the issue of hunger at the center is important, as a child dies of hunger somewhere around the world. Kawawa naman. The focus here is food for school to make kids stay in school. It also lessens child labor. I want sana to have hunger and malnutrition covered by media at least once a week because it is an issue that is as important or even more so but none is paying too much attention to it. That's part of my job, to help WFP work to put the issue of hunger at the center."
