FORMULA FOR LONG LIFE. Joaquin Ligumbres is a hometown legend. He wrote poems in Binisaya, English and Spanish. He gave some copies to me for safekeeping and future publication because none of his family was into the literary arts. Sadly, I lost all of them when the earthquake struck in 2013.
Known to be a walking dictionary, he reportedly sired seven sons all named after him, as in Joaquin Uno, Joaquin Dos, Joaquin Tres, etc. At 76, he returned to school at the University of Bohol in the hope of getting a Bachelor of Arts degree. He never got to finish it.
A jack of all trades, he was already very old when he worked as our cemetery gardener, at which time I asked him how he was able to maintain his healthy physique. (Imagine ... in his 80s he could still do 20 push-ups using only three fingers on each hand !!!) His answer to my query was ... one glass of milk everyday. He lived to be almost a hundred. By the way, he and his best friend, my father, share the same date of birth. Tatay passed on at 81.
So, here I am with my nightly dose of a glass (aw, coffee-mug) of milk, reminiscing the goodness of the man my townmates would call Ngidz.
He must be smiling at me now from beyond the Milky Way. Cheers, Ngidz!
