A Filipino community leader in San Francisco’s Bay Area was recognized recently by the U.S. Jefferson Awards Program in the field of Public Service among 50 recipients this year.
George Gange was honored in ceremonies at the Herbst Theatre of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Centre on January 13.
Known in the community as the “Music Man with a Mission,†Gange plays Filipino folk melodies with his "Filipino Veterans Rondalla†bringing smiles to the faces of listeners. His audience range from veterans in Palo Alto to seniors in nursing homes.
Gange is also known for raising funds for worthy causes and for serving as community coordinator in bringing the Consulate General to San Jose for consular missions.
The Jefferson Awards Program was established in 1972 to encourage and recognize individuals for their achievements and contributions in public and community service.
For his tireless efforts in serving the Filipino-American community in Northern California, Gange also received the Presidential Award for Outstanding Individuals and Organizations Overseas (Banaag category) from President Benigno S. Aquino III in official ceremonies held at Malacañang Palace in Manila last December. (PNA)
