The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is in search of poor but bright graduating high school students worth of its 2008 Science and Technology Scholarship.

Thru its Science Education Institute (SEI), the DOST will award the scholarship in bachelor degree to qualifiers who have high aptitude in science and mathematics and willing to pursue fields of science and technology in college.

DOST Sec. Estrella Alabastro has tapped the office of First District Rep. Edgar Chatto, a working member of the education committee in Congress, to help facilitate in Bohol the applications for the scholarship that explores 21 fields.

Specializations offered deal with agricultural chemistry, biochemistry, biology, chemical engineering, chemistry, chemistry teaching, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, electronics and communications engineering, food technology, industrial engineering, information technology, materials engineering, mathematics, mathematics teaching, mechanical engineering, molecular biology and biotechnology, physics, physics teaching and statistics.

Scholars ere entitled to free tuition and other school fees worth P6,000 per semester, allowances for textbooks and essential school supplies, grant for military science/physical education uniform, transportation allowance, monthly living allowance of as much as P4,000, group health and accident insurance, additional privileges in summer studies, and post graduation clothing allowance.

Chatto, whose top priorities include the supreme value of education, encouraged potential qualifiers to grab the chance because there is no substitute for a secured future.

To pass the general criteria of eligibility, an applicant must be a poor, talented student belonging to family whose socio-economic status does not exceed the values of certain indicators approved by the DOST-SEI Advisory Committee on Scholarship.

He/she must be a member of the top five percent (5%) of the regular high school graduating class or a member of the graduating class of a DOST-SEI-identified or DepEd-recognized science high school.

Not qualified to apply are those who have earned post secondary/undergraduate course, taken any DOST-SEI science and technology scholarship examination, and applied for immigrant status in any foreign country.

The DOST secretary provided Chatto's office copies of scholarship application form and brochure for the convenience of those who are interested.

The qualifying aptitude examination, which is the basis in selecting the 2008 batch of scholars, for applicants from Bohol and other Central Visayas areas will be done at the DOST Regional Office in Cebu City on Jan. 13, a Sunday, next year.

The scholarship awardee shall enroll in any of the state universities and colleges or tertiary institutions identified as Commission on Higher Education (CHED) centers of excellence/development.

Applications have to be filed until this Friday, Nov. 16.
