Philippine Information AgencyBohol Health authorities would still recommend anti-rabies shots for persons in dog bite cases, even if the dog has been given animal rabies vaccines.
At the Kapihan sa PIA, GCGMH information officer Dr. Edgar Pizarras and Provincial Heath Team Leader Dr. Portia Reyes cited a World Health Organization study which determines that even a dog is vaccinated with anti-rabies, it can still transmit the virus to a bite victim.
Based on WHO standards, animal bite victims are still not safe, says Dr. Pizarras.
Over this, the effort to put up a community based approach on anti-rabies control gains a mileage as the new Provincial Board members would tackle the issue first thing within the week, assures Vice Governor Julius Caesar Herrera.
Bohol has also allowed a private company to set up animal bite and treatment centers in Bohol-run hospitals to respond to the incapacity of the government to fill the need for anti-rabies vaccines.
Aside from the Tagbilaran City’s Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital and Carlos P. Garcia Provincial Hospital in Talibon, new animal bite treatment centers were opened recently in Jagna, Loon and Carmen Hospitals.
The province also planned to allow Family Vaccines and Specialty Clinics to open up in Catigbian, Ubay and Inabanga animal bite centers. (PIA)
