DENGUE ALERT. On behalf of the Holy Spirit School Federated Parents-Teachers Association (HSS-FPTA), my husband Jerome, Cielo and I went to extend condolences to the family of the late Sandra Dinorog (Calceta Street) the day before her interment. The daughter of Concepcion “Siony” Dinorog (a schoolmate during my college days at Divine Word College-Tagbilaran, now a caregiver in Canada), Sandra (born on February 2, 2001), a six-year-old Grade 1-Joy pupil of Holy Spirit School, succumbed to death due to complications caused by dengue hemorrhagic fever. For many times we have heard that “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.” Allow me then to share with you information on dengue (pronounced “den-ghee”). “It is a flu-like viral disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Dengue hemorrhagic fever is an acute febrile viral disease caused by dengue viruses which are transmitted to humans through the bites of infective female aedes mosquitoes. The disease (incubation period is from 3 to 14 days), is not directly transmitted from person to person. What are its signs and symptoms? Dengue is characterized by sudden onset fever for 3 to 5 days, intense headache, muscle pain, joint pain, eye pain, anorexia, gastro-intestinal disturbances, and rash. If someone has observed these signs and symptoms on his or her family member, medical advice must be sought, as untreated dengue hemorrhagic fever can be fatal. Dengue is diagnosed by blood test. At present, there is no specific treatment, no vaccine is currently available. The only method of controlling dengue is to combat the aedes mosquitoes. Eliminating mosquito breeding sites is the key preventive measure. Dengue could also be prevented by using proper solid waste disposal methods, eliminating stagnant water in domestic environment, having improved water storage practices, discarding items that can collect rain or run-off water, especially old tires, changing regularly the outdoor water containers, using aerosol and liquid sprays to kill adult mosquitoes, using mosquito coil to be placed near possible entrance, such as windows, wearing long-sleeved clothes and long trousers when going outdoors, applying insect repellent on clothes and Off lotion for exposed part of the body, especially when traveling, and using mosquito bednet when the room is not air-conditioned.

THE HOLY SPIRIT SCHOOL FEDERATED PARENTS-TEACHERS ASSOCIATION IS HEADED BY JERRY JOSEPH AZCONA LIM.
