BBC - US President George W Bush's first Secretary of State, Colin Powell, has endorsed Democratic election candidate Barack Obama for the White House.

Backing Mr Obama over John McCain, the Republican Party's choice to succeed Mr Bush in November, he said the Democrat had the "ability to inspire".

"All Americans... not just African-Americans" would be proud of an Obama win, he argued.

Mr McCain said he was not surprised at his "long-time friend's" decision.

He pointed out that other former secretaries of state had backed his own candidacy, naming them as Henry Kissinger, James Baker, Lawrence Eagleburger and Alexander Haig - all Republicans.

Barack Obama was "honoured" to have Mr Powell's support, campaign spokesman Robert Gibbs said, adding that the two men had spoken for 10 minutes by telephone.

"He said he looked forward to taking advantage of his advice in the next two weeks, and hopefully over the next four years," the spokesman added.

I find it entertaining that Bush's former Secretary of State has endorsed a presidential candidate of the other ticket.

I have immense respect for General-Secretary of State Colin Powell because the man was a strategic member of the Armed Forces during the 1st Gulf War (serving as join chief of staff). This man is a strategic and military maverick and genius.

It says alot for him to endorse Senator Barak Obama.

Its unfortunate for him to have picked her. She significantly has altered his favor amongst conservative voters.

I, being a conservative voter, have been greatly influenced by it.

Well, others claimed that Palin upped the votes for McCain that's why he takes her to rallies to energize the party. Strategy wise, seldom can you see Obama and Biden together in rallies. Michelle Obama goes to rally all by herself while Lady McCain is almost always with McCain. Mas daghan tao ma reach out sa Democrats kay daghan man sila ga represent in various rallies.
