New York Times reports that more people could be dead:A National Weather Service official told The Associated Press that at least 14 people were dead in American Samoa, a United States territory that falls about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand, and officials in the island nation of Samoa told Reuters that as many as 100 people died there, with 20 confirmed dead.

The doomsayers centuries ago made the same observation that we all have on our mind now:"The Earth is degenerating today. Bribery and corruption abound. Children no longer obey their parents, every man wants to write a book, and it is evident that the end of the world is fast approaching." Allegedly this came from an Assyrian tablet, c. 2800 BCE. An almost identical message was said to have appeared as graffiti on a wall in Pompeii.
