Hannibal (Canaanite, Punic or Carthaginian Hebrew: ??????, Ba'al is my grace, or Ba'al has given me grace), son of Hamilcar Barca, (247 BC – ca. 183 BC,[1][2][3][4][5] short form Hannibal) was a Carthaginian military commander and tactician, later also working in other professions, who is popularly credited as one of the finest commanders in history. He lived during a period of tension in the Mediterranean, when Rome (then the Roman Republic) established its supremacy over other great powers such as Carthage, Macedon, Syracuse, and the Seleucid empire. He is one of the best-known Carthaginian commanders. His most famous achievement was at the outbreak of the Second Punic War, when he marched an army, which included war elephants, from Iberia over the Pyrenees and the Alps into northern Italy.

During his invasion of Italy, he defeated the Romans in a series of battles, including those at Trebia, Trasimene and Cannae. He maintained an army in Italy for more than a decade afterward, never losing a major engagement, but could not force the Romans to accept his terms for peace. A Roman counter-invasion of Africa forced him to return to Carthage, where he was defeated in the Battle of Zama. After the war he successfully ran for the office of suffet. He enacted political and financial reforms to enable the payment of the war indemnity imposed by Rome. However, his reforms were unpopular with members of the upper Roman class forcing Hannibal to go into exile. During his exile, he lived at the Seleucid court, where he acted as military advisor to Antiochus III in his war against Rome. After Antiochus III met defeat and was forced to accept their terms, Hannibal fled again, making a stop in Armenia, where he worked as a planner for the new capital. His flight ended in the court of Bithynia where he may have achieved an outstanding naval victory by means of biological warfare and was afterwards betrayed to the Romans.

Hannibal is universally ranked as one of the greatest military commanders and tacticians in history.[citation needed] Military historian Theodore Ayrault Dodge once famously called Hannibal the "father of strategy",[6] because his greatest enemy, Rome, came to adopt elements of his military tactics in its own strategic arsenal. This praise has earned him a strong reputation in the modern world and he was regarded as a "gifted strategist" by men like Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington. His life has been the basis for a number of films and documentaries.

He has been attributed with the famous quotation, "We will either find a way, or make one."

Alexander the Great.

He conquered 3 continents. Before he was 25 he was Ruler of Greece, King of Macedonia, Pharaoh of Egypt, along with other titles.

Why he can be considered great.:

He took what he and his father started and refined it to do the following.

1.He created set roles for members of his army.
2.Refined the weapons to be used by each person.
3.He for the first time in history provided ALL members of his army with what they needed for batttle. (provision and weapons and armor)
4. Established a standard for education for children to learn in school to make them ready for the army when they were of age.
5.He payed his troops for every day as enlisted men, not random civil regements.
6.He opened endless trade routs and founded / rebuilt more then 40 cities.
7.He in the late portion of his short life begain to merge all races together.
8.Founded the great Library in Alexandria Egypt.
9.Proved use of a profetional army was the best way to wage war. Not civil draft (peasant) armies.

You are right, Anna.

From reading about Alexander the Great, one cannot fathom how a mere prince of a small Macedonian state was capable of uniting the once feeble and discontinous Greek city states into a mobilized force that dared take on the might of the Persian Empire. The small Greek states were able in taking down the Mighty Bull that was Persia, extending his empire to the very gates of India.

Man's ingenuity and raw determination is manifested in the life of Alexander. He achieved so much in his young life, that many of his cohorts, upon his death, regarded him as a Demi-God.

He was a brilliant tactician, conquoring not only Persia, but Egypt and the Nile. His Legend precedes him.

Caesar Augustus
« Reply #5 on: March 06, 2008, 01:52:17 AM »

Ad eundum quo nemo ante iit, Ave Caesar Agustus! Imperador et Imperium Romanum!!

Caesar Augustus, the First Emperor of the Roman Empire.
With his Mighty Hand, he crushed dissidents and accusers of His Throne, and Expanded the Reaches of the Roman Empire to the very beaches of Britannia, the deserts of Numidia, the Nile of Egypt, to the exotic trade routes of Parthianium, to the frigid regions of Slavonic Lands in Eastern Europe.

With His Mighty Rule, the Empire Prospered and the period of Pax Romana reverberated throughout the known world. Roman Culture was the Law, and Caesar was God. The Greatest Empire in Western History was born. The Empire controlled large parts of 3 continents (Europium, Africanium, Asificum), over 1/4th of the population of the world lived and died under the Rule of the Caesars.

Mao Zedong

The man that was Mao Zedong was an invaluable player in domestic affairs as well as external affairs in China and Her sphere of influence, namely East Asia and South East Asia. Mao was the leader of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) and resisted the authoritarian federalist government of Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai Shek) of the Kuomintang. Under Mao Zedong's influence, the Communist forces took control of Mainland China, forcing the nationalist forces to abandon all control of Zhong Guo (China) and flea for the island of Formosa (Taiwan), where they remain to this day.

Mao Zedong's policies thundered the region as he brought about the liquidation of confucian culture during the Great Cultural Revolution, spearheading China's industrialization and banishing old superstitious concepts and setting aside traditional Chinese religiosity for equalitarianism that communism and socialism mandated. Under his administration, he was able to instill within the youth, the concept of 'perpetual rebellion' against a corrupt government.

His policies were known for its militaristic tendencies. He supported North Korea during its war for unification, generous enough to send over 1,000,000 Chinese Volunteer Liberational Army to drive down the UN and American forces south of the 38th parallel. They succeeded in this, though, his policies led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Chinese troops. His expanisionist policies also initiated the 1962 Chinese-Indian Border War, where China regained Arunal Pradesh from India. The War ended towards China's favor.

He is known for his eternal fingerprint on the Chinese people. He mobilized the largest and most populous nation in the world, militarized it, and instilled within that Dragon of a nation a raw, unrestrained nationalistic attitude that survives even to this day.

Another world leader that I admire. One, for his oratory skills in rallying the populace to be his vanguard. Second, for his brilliance in military tactics; conquering most of continental Europe in the Spirit of French Revolutionary Discourse. Third, for his broad-minded and long termed goal in producing and creating a 'Unified Europe' during a time when regionalism, feudalism, pragmatism was still raw in some parts of Europe. When the time of ancient and backwards total autocratic authoritarianism ruled the day. He dreamt of a Republican system for a Unified French Europe.

Yes, I speak of the man by the name of Napoleon Bonaparte.

His legacy, his brilliance, and his history precedes him.
