The Roman Empire is probably the most pivotal and most influential empire in the history of man kind.
Rome practically civilized Europe and spread forth its civilization to all corners of its empire, hispania, gaul-france, germania, dacia, byzantium, arabia, palestinia, algeria etc. Western Europe's culture derives back to Roman culture (Roman Republicanism, roman jurisprudence, roman dogmatism, roman logics, roman questionability, roman ethics).
Christianity itself spread all over Europe and then to the corners of the world because of Rome.
Under the rule of Emperor Constantine I, the Emperor was about to fight a war with barbarians and saw a cross of Jesus in the sky. He won the battle and he credited the Roman victory to the cross, or divine intervention. He was the first Emperor of the Roman Empire to be baptized to the Catholic faith and with that he proclaimed Catholicism-Christianity to be the state religion of the Empire. He outlawed pagan worship and his Imperial decree reverberated throughout all the 4 corners of the empire. That is why Europe is Christian (predominantly Roman Catholic). And from Catholicism, sprang forth other christian denominations (baptism, Presbyterianism, calvanism, methodist, lutheran, etc). However none of that would have occurred had it not been for Rome who endorsed Christianity and proclaimed it the state religion of the entire Roman Empire.
Even after the fall of the Roman Empire, Rome's cultural influence was eternalized. The feudal states of Europe and even the empires of Byzantium, Holy Roman Empire, France, Spain, England, Italian Principalities etc all endorsed Catholic-Christianity or Christianity in general.
And when these said nations developed into powerful states during the Age of European Imperialism, it was they that spread Christian faith throughout their overseas empire.
For Example:
1. German Empire spread catholicism and lutheranism in its empire in the Marianas and in Africa
2. The Spanish Empire spread Roman Catholicism in North, Central and Southern America as well as in Guam and the Philippines
3. Portugal spread catholicism in southern India, Sri Lanka and parts of present day Indonesia
4. Great Britain spread forth Calvinism, Presbyterianism, and puritanism in the American colonies and Canada, which then eventually evolved to Baptism, Methodist, Unitarian Universalists, United Churches of Christ etc etc.
Their influence to the world, in terms of religion, jurisprudence, law, ethics, universality all stems back to The Roman Empire.
