Agence France Press:
President Barack Obama on Wednesday issued his toughest criticism yet of an
Arizona immigration law that critics say enshrines racial profiling, warning that people should not be singled out by their appearance.
The president also urged Republicans to join him in beginning work on a comprehensive immigration reform bill this year—but offered no assurances he would push for legislation before mid-term elections in November.
The new law in the southwestern state, one of the toughest in the
United States, allows police to question and detain anyone they believe may be an illegal immigrant, even if they are not suspected of committing another
crime.
Obama admitted that some states felt betrayed by a wave of illegal immigration, but said the answer was not to "undermine fundamental principles that define us as a nation."
"You can't start singling out people because of who they look like or how they talk or how they dress," Obama said at the White House, at a reception marking the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo.
