Press Release: Lt. Gen. Michael Langley is set to become the first Black four-star general in the Marines' 246-year history. He will appear before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday and, if confirmed by the Senate, he will lead thousands of U.S. troops in Africa as chief of U.S. Africa Command.
Langley, who is from Shreveport, LA, has served more than three decades in the U.S. Marine Corps. He has served abroad in Afghanistan, Japan, and Somalia. Langley has received multiple advanced degrees in strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College and the U.S. Army War College. The Louisiana native is one of only six Black generals to serve in the branch.
Increasing diversity in the armed forces, especially among its leadership ranks, has been an ongoing effort for the U.S. military’s top brass. More than 70 white men have achieved and earned the highest rank in the Marines, vs. Langley as the sole Black man. More than 80% of generals in all of the U.S. military branches are white, according to research by the Council on Foreign Relations.
