TOKYO - AT least one man died and more than 200 people were injured after the Tokyo region was hit at the weekend by the season's heaviest snowfall, officials and Japanese media said on Monday.
'A 67-year-old man died after falling from the roof of his house' on Sunday in Yokohama, near Tokyo, a municipal safety official said, adding 58 other people had been injured in the city by early on Monday.
He is believed to have been checking the snowfall on his house, the official said. Up to seven centimetres (2.8 inches) of snow was observed in Yokohama on Sunday, according to the weather agency.
Road and air traffic was still partially disrupted Monday, with television morning shows warning viewers about frozen and slippery roads.
In Tokyo alone, 74 people were rushed to hospital by late on Sunday, according to a spokeswoman for the Tokyo Fire Department, which is in charge of ambulance services.
Among them was a 42-year-old man who suffered a serious brain injury. 'He fell when he tried to get around a puddle of melting snow,' the official said.
Japanese media said more than 200 people were injured in Tokyo and neighbouring prefectures.
It has been a harsh winter across East Asia, with parts of China seeing the heaviest snow in 100 years, stranding millions of people. -- AFP
