Several people were injured Thursday when a gunman opened fire inside a Northern Illinois University lecture hall, sending screaming students fleeing.

It has been confirmed that there has been a shooting on campus and several people have been taken away by ambulance,'' officials said in a message posted on the school's Web site at 3:50 p.m.People are urged not to come to campus.''

The DeKalb Daily Chronicle, citing information heard over a police scanner shortly after 3 p.m., said officers were alerted to a white, male shooter with a shotgun and pistol.
