News AuTwo decades after their murders shocked Victoria, a man has been charged over the horrific deaths of a Ferntree Gully mother and daughter.
Russell John Gesah, 43, was today charged with the brutal murders of Margaret Tapp, 35, and her nine-year-old daughter Seana on August 8, 1984.
Seana had been sexually assaulted before both victims were strangled to death in their beds.
Homicide detectives this morning were granted permission to question Gesah before charging him with two counts of murder.
The Herald Sun today exclusively revealed how a police secured a breakthrough in the case using DNA technology.
Investigators compared DNA evidence found on an item of Seana's clothing with tens of thousands of profiles on the national DNA computer database before coming up with an alleged match.
"We had already eliminated all the known suspects in the case through a DNA sample, but because this man was never a suspect he was never tested," Detective Senior Sergeant Jeff Maher said.
