Mounting Protests in Burma; biggest since 1988 massacre
« on: September 25, 2007, 09:45:32 AM »
Burma's ruling military junta has warned it is ready to "take action" against Buddhist monks leading mounting protests, state media have reported.

Brig Gen Thura Myint Maung, minister for religion, warned them not to break Buddhist "rules and regulations" as Rangoon saw the largest march yet.

He blamed the protests on "destructive elements" opposed to peace in Burma.

President George W Bush is set to announce fresh US sanctions on Burmese leaders, the White House says.

The sanctions, which will include a ban on US visas, will be announced during Mr Bush's speech at the United Nations on Tuesday, US National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said.

The military government has so far showed restraint against the protests.

Monks are highly revered in Burma and correspondents say any move by the junta to crush their demonstrations would spark an outcry.

But there are fears of a repeat of 1988, correspondents say, when the last democracy uprising was crushed by the military and some 3,000 people were killed.

Burma's military junta is reportedly backed by Russia and China.

Do you think Russia and China will come in, Mike? If there were to be a revolution in Burma??

Bran, I have officemates who are Burmese. They said China and Russia have interests in the oil reserves of Burma.

But any help from China and Russia would come stealthily, otherwise an open support would spark a worldwide scorn, let alone a reprimand from the United Nations.

The U.S. may not intervene. The U.S. has no financial interest in Burma. :)

Its things like this that always tingles my spine, you know Mike. I'm just awed that monks are protesting the Junta...holy men protesting. Im just as interested in this as anyone else, but I am really interested to see how the Junta will react...will it use force, or will it give in to some reform.

Im so sorry to be limited in my information about the region, Mike, but what has ASEAN done in regard to this? I mean, is not Burma part of ASEAN and im sure ASEAN leaders had said something to burman leaders about this incident? What did they say, if they did?

The U.S. and the UN have said many things against Burma but to no effect. The ASEAN is meaningless to Burma.

Burma is basically sealed off from the rest of the world. Its currency is worthless.

More than a million of Burmese and counting are fleeing to Thailand as illegal immigrants because of poverty and oppression in their country.

My British friend is on a cycling tour for the Burmese refugees. His website is www.getusoutofhere.net, which has articles on the Burmese condition. By the way, I design and maintain this website. :)

I just visited the web site, Mike. Well done!! I really am proud that you and your friend are standing up for such a noble cause. I hope the junta do not use force and murder this time, if monks are protesting, that should be telling them something....

Again, thanks for the update.
