PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Leaders of leftist parties in central Europe said Friday they oppose plans by Washington to build parts of its missile defense system in the region.
"We are concerned by the decision to deploy the system," said a statement signed by the heads of the Social Democratic or other left-leaning parties in the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Poland and Slovakia. "We do not want any new missiles in Europe."
The U.S. made a formal request in January to place a radar base southwest of Prague. It would be linked with 10 interceptor missiles that would be based in neighboring Poland. The two former Soviet satellite states are now members of NATO.
Both the Czech and Polish governments are amenable to hosting the missile-shield bases. But a majority of the public in both countries rejects the idea, polls show.
Russia also opposes the plan, calling it a threat close to its borders. The United States has argued the system is meant to counter missile threats from Iran.
