Iraqi journalist throws shoes at Bush in Baghdad
« on: December 15, 2008, 09:41:06 PM »
BAGHDAD: President George W. Bush's valedictory visit to Iraq will probably be remembered for the unscripted moment when an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at Bush's head and denounced him on live television as a "dog" who had delivered death and sorrow here from nearly six years of war.

The drama unfolded shortly after Bush appeared Sunday at a news conference in Baghdad with Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki to highlight the newly adopted security agreement between the United States and Iraq.

That agreement includes a commitment to withdraw all American forces by the end of 2011.

The Iraqi journalist, Muntader al-Zaidi, 28, a correspondent for Al Baghdadia, an independent Iraqi station, stood up about 3.5 meters, about 12 feet, from Bush and shouted in Arabic: "This is a gift from the Iraqis; this is the farewell kiss, you dog!" He then threw a shoe at Bush, who ducked and narrowly avoided it.

As stunned security agents and guards, officials and journalists watched, Zaidi then threw his other shoe, shouting in Arabic, "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq!" That shoe also narrowly missed Bush as Maliki stuck a hand in front of the president's face to help shield him.

Chaos immediately ensued as a scrum of Maliki's security agents jumped on the man, wrestled him to the floor and hustled him out of the ornate room where the news conference was taking place. They kicked him and beat him until "he was crying like a woman," said Mohammed Taher, a reporter for Afaq, a station owned by the Dawa Party, which is led by Maliki. Zaidi was then detained on unspecified charges.

Other Iraqi journalists in the front row of the news conference publicly apologized to Bush, who was uninjured and tried to brush off the incident by making a joke. "All I can report is it is a size 10," he said, continuing to take a few questions and noting the apologies.

He also called the incident a sign of democracy in Iraq, saying, "That's what people do in a free society, draw attention to themselves," as the man's screaming could be heard outside.

But the moment clearly unnerved the aides of Maliki and some of the Americans in Bush's entourage, partly because it was televised and may have revealed a security lapse in the so-called Green Zone, the most heavily secured part of Baghdad.

Dana Perino, the White press secretary, was visibly distraught, and NBC News reported that she had been struck in the face by a microphone in the chaos.

Bush visited Iraq as part of an unannounced trip that later took him to Afghanistan, where he was meeting Monday with U.S. troops and President Hamid Karzai.

The shoe-throwing incident also punctuated Bush's visit - his fourth - in a deeply symbolic way, reflecting the conflicted views in Iraq of a man who had toppled Saddam Hussein, ordered the occupation of the country and brought it the kind of freedoms unthinkable under Saddam's rule but at enormous costs.

Hitting someone with a shoe is considered the supreme insult in Iraq. It means that the target is even lower than the shoe, which is always on the ground and dirty. Crowds of people hurled their shoes at the giant statue of Saddam that once stood in Firdos Square in Baghdad before helping U.S. Marines to pull it down April 9, 2003, the day the capital fell. More recently, a far bigger crowd made up of Iraqis who had opposed the security agreement did the same with an effigy of Bush in the same square, flinging their shoes at it before burning it.

Zaidi's motivations in carrying out a potentially career-ending act were unclear, but friends described him as a devoted journalist.

"He was committed to his job and after training in Lebanon became chief of correspondents about a month ago," said Haider Nassar, who worked with him at Baghdadia.

"He had bad feelings about the coalition forces," said Nassar, referring to the U.S.-led foreign military forces in Iraq. Nassar also said Zaidi had asked to cover the news conference, since he was the chief correspondent. Another friend said Zaidi often ended his reports by saying "Reporting from occupied Baghdad, this is Muntader al-Zaidi."

Like many Iraqi reporters at the news conference, Nassar said he did not think this was an effective way for Zaidi to make his points. "This is so silly; it's just the behavior of an individual. He destroyed his future," he said.

Well, it must have been humiliating for Bush to have a journalist or any man for that matter threw shoes on him.  I heard it is an ultimate show of disrespect for the Iraqis and Muslims as a whole to have somebody throw shoe on you.  And two shoes at that! I have a feeling years from now, this will be asked in Jeopardy or Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.  :D Having said that, I think the journalist showed poor judgment in doing so.  He humiliated his own country leaders more than he did to Bush.  Well, a lot of people hailed him as a hero for throwing shoes on Bush which was unthinkable that anybody can do with all the secret agents surrounding Bush.

i might be inclined to believe that this shoe-thowing incident will go down in history in some way. certainly, everyone who think that america does not have any business whatsoever in iraq would consider the iraqi journalist some kind of a hero... one thing that the incident proves in regard to security is that no amount of measure is foolproof. unless security people begin to ban shoes in areas classified as restricted :-)

Muntadhar al-Zaidi
Shouting as he was dragged to the floor, the reporter called his shoe-throwing -- a traditional insult in Arab culture -- a "farewell kiss" to a "dog" who launched the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He was arrested and alledgely mishandled.

Al-Baghdadia reported Tuesday al-Zaidi called one of his brothers and said he was in the custody of judicial authorities and will appear Wednesday in Baghdad's Central Criminal Court. He asked his defense team to meet him there, the network said.

it was more symbolic of displeasure/insult for me than the intention of hitting Bush...of course, being hit by those 10-size shoes would have been a most welcomed bunos..

I don't think the journalist meant to throw his shoes in a symbolic manner.  He really meant to hit the US President. It was with passion!

By David Jackson, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — President Bush may have been amused by the shoe-throwing incident in Iraq, but first lady Laura Bush was not.
"As a wife, I saw it as an assault, and that's what it was," she told USA TODAY during an interview at the White House on Thursday. "So I didn't laugh it off."

A month before returning to private life, Bush said she will continue her public advocacy of women's rights in Afghanistan and democracy for Burma. A self-described "ambassador" for her husband's policies over the past eight years, Bush praised her husband's record in Iraq and Afghanistan. She said she will be an active defender of those actions "because they are worth defending."

"Fifty million people are free from tyranny because of the United States, because of my husband's policies," Bush said. "These are very, very important, world-changing happenings, and they're for the best."

On Iraq, she said, "Do people really wish Saddam Hussein were still there? I don't think so."

Shoe-Throwing Journalist Sentenced To 3 Years In Prison
« Reply #28 on: March 13, 2009, 12:00:44 AM »
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN)  -- Muntadher al-Zaidi, the man seen as a hero in some circles for throwing his shoes at then-U.S. President George W. Bush, was sentenced to three years in prison Thursday by an Iraqi court.

He explained his actions during an hourlong appearance last month in the Central Criminal Court of Iraq. Asked whether anyone pushed or motivated him, al-Zaidi said he was spurred by the "violations that are committed against the Iraqi people."

In the Middle East, throwing shoes at someone is traditionally a sign of contempt.

Al-Zaidi's angry gesture touched a defiant nerve throughout the Arab and Muslim world. He is regarded by many people as a hero, and demonstrators took to the streets in the Arab world and called for his release shortly after the incident.

Al-Zaidi, who faced a charge of assaulting a visiting head of state, had 17 lawyers to defend him. There were also three judges in the courtroom, along with the prosecutor and family members.

In December, his defense team told CNN that he could face 15 years in prison if convicted. But al-Zaidi's defense team was hoping to change his charge to an insult rather than assault, which would have brought about three months in prison
