“I don’t think of it as a bag…it’s more of a travel system,” Bank said. “I designed The Highlander as a highly organized, carry-on approved travel bag. It’s made to open flat, so you never have to unpack it, to be quick and easy to get through airport security and compact enough to carry everything you need for trips up to four days. There’s no more checked luggage and the frustration that comes with it.”
Bank represents his family’s fourth generation in the leather business, which started in the 1940s when his great-grandfather immigrated to Canada with his family after surviving the Holocaust. He started as a cowhide trader with his brother and eventually built their own hide plant in Toronto.
“Inspired by my family history, I decided to chart my own course to create beautiful, functional and well-made leather goods, using the highest quality leather from my family's own tannery,” he said. “It means a lot to me to continue my family legacy.”
Over more than seven decades, Bank’s family has sold leather across the globe, and now owns Wicket and Craig of America – one of two remaining vegetable tanneries in the United States. Wicket & Craig is the only tannery in the world capable of tanning this specific weatherproof leather using its proprietary process, and supplies leather to many of the top fashion brands around the world.
“Most other high-quality leather bags are unreasonably expensive, but The Highlander is, what I call, ‘reasonable luxury,’” Bank said. “It’s beautiful, tough and priced well, especially considering the quality of the materials and level of manufacturing involved in production.”
